floydBy Jim Dower: Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) isn’t content with just trying to get a decision win over WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) on September 13th. Maidana wants to KO Mayweather so that he doesn’t find himself on the losing end of what he feels is another controversial decision like last time he fought him in May of this year.

“I hope to knock him out in the 9th,” Maidana said to esnewsreporting.com.

Maidana is working on his endurance in training camp so that he can fight hard enough for the full fight for him to score a knockout or win a decision this time.

Last May, Maidana fought at a high level for the first 5 rounds, but after that he looked like he didn’t have the energy to continue to push the pace like he’d done in the first half of the fight.

A knockout win for Maidana would be a huge boost to his career and his banking account. Maidana’s status in the boxing world would immediately go up with him being put in the same class as Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. But just as important, a win for Maidana would give him a chance for a third fight against Mayweather. Maidana is open for a third fight, and he says he’d give Mayweather a rematch because he gave him a rematch.

For Maidana to knock Mayweather out, he’s going to need to stay close to him for 3 minutes of every round, and throw a lot of punches. Maidana can’t let Mayweather have open space to fight in the center of the ring like he was doing in the second half of their previous fight.

Maidana can’t let Mayweather breathe for an instant in this fight because if he’s able to fight without pressure, then he’ll box Maidana’s head off and make him look bad. But by Maidana pressuring Mayweather, he can keep him from getting into his game.
