maidana1111By Raj Parmar: Earlier today, it was confirmed in a media conference call to promote the rematch between Floyd Mayweather (46-0, 26 KO’s) and Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s) that Maidana will in fact wear the same gloves he used in the first fight, which is the Everlast Powerlock model.

A day before the first fight, the event was threatened to be cancelled when Floyd’s team objected to the gloves Maidana had selected for the bout. After some tense hours, it was decided that Maidana would have to switch his original gloves and wear the Powerlock model.

The gloves Maidana originally wanted to use was the Everlast MX model, which is a glove that is friendly to power punchers as the glove is made up of a combination of foam and horse hair. The Powerlock model is made up of all foam and is designed to protect a fighter’s hands. Maidana has little concern for hand injury thus would favor a glove with no special precautions to protect a boxer’s hand.

“Yes, Maidana will be wearing the Powerlock gloves,” stated Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe on the conference call. Marcos signed the contract to rematch Mayweather without a stipulation included for which gloves he can use, however he was hoping he would be able to use the MX gloves as they are his gloves of choice. Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia has indicated they have been training with the Powerlock gloves in camp and are happy to know in advance which gloves they will be using.

“We agreed to the fight, we can’t go back and say anything about the gloves,” Garcia stated on the call, “We agreed to those gloves. There are no excuses.”

Maidana for his part seems focused intensely on getting back in the ring with Floyd, regardless of the gloves. He appeared extremely fired up on the call and is eager to get his hands on Floyd and overwhelm the top pound for pound fighter in the sport with endless punches and activity.

“I already know the mistakes Mayweather makes and I’ll be ready to take advantage this time. I hope Mayweather will fight like a man and stand in front of me again. He says he wants to please the fans, so we’ll see,” Maidana explained, “The times when he was able to get away is because I let him. This time, I won’t get tired and I’ll force him to fight. Stop crying like a little bitch and fight.”

Marcos went on to state that he feels Floyd was fighting off the ropes not for the fans’ sake as Floyd has indicated, but because he put extreme pressure on Floyd and forced him to fight that way.

“When I was able to pressure him, I did very well. When he moved is when I had problems. I think I forced him to fight and that’s the reason he fought that way. I don’t think he did it for the fans,” Maidana said, “It’s very difficult to knock out Floyd because he runs, but I’ll do my best to make it happen. This fight, I’m not going to respect him. I’m going to go after him and make him fight. There are things he does in there too. He should stop complaining. Come the 8th or 9th round, Mayweather is going to be so tired from punches, he won’t be able to defend anymore.”
