Khan hoping Brook will beat Porter and bring IBF strap back home

By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan and Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KOs) may have exchanged insults in the past, but Khan is still hoping that Brook will be winning his fight against IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KOs) tonight at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Is Khan giving Brook words of encouragement because he’s a good one or is he doing this because he’s hoping the two of them will get a chance to face each other later on this year in front of 80,000 fans at Wembley Stadium London, UK?

To be honest, Brook is pretty much Khan’s only chance for a huge payday fight in November or December. Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao have no interest in fighting Khan at the moment, and that could stay that way permanently depending on their views of his ability to attract pay-per-view buys.

There isn’t anyone else popular enough to attract a big audience in the UK right now in a fight against Khan. Superstars Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Miguel Cotto have shown no interest in fighting Khan, and I doubt that Khan would even agree to fight them even if they were interested in mixing it up with him.

A Khan-Brook would likely give Khan his biggest payday of his career by far. It would give him that magical payday cash out fight that would give Khan enough money to leave the game and retire on if he chose to depending on how big Khan’s purse split is.

If Khan takes the lion’s share of the loot by giving Brook an 80-20 split, Khan could end up with quite a bit of money this fight, especially if they sell it on Sky Box Office the way Carl Froch’s two fights against George Groves were.

It doesn’t look like Brook is going to be able to pull off a huge upset win over Porter, because the odds makers have Porter as the guy that will be winning the fight. I’m not one to disagree with so many people picking Porter to win. They’ve got to know what they’re doing when they pick Porter as the guy to win this fight.

Porter hasn’t said anything about whether he would want to fight Khan next, but even if he did, it probably won’t take in the UK. It would be a fight that would be staged in the U.S, likely at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Porter’s father Ken Porter said recently that he has no interest of having Shawn defend his title against Juan Manuel Marquez in Mexico because it would be giving Marquez an advantage. I would have to conclude that Ken feels the same way about not wanting Shawn to defend his title against Khan in the UK.
