thurman52By Allan Fox: WBA interim welterweight champion Keith Thurman (23-0, 21 KOs) is out of action with an injured shoulder he hurt while training.

Due to the injury, Thurman won’t be fighting on the undercard of the September 13th rematch between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Instead, Thurman, 25, will be back in the ring in October against an opponent to be determined, provided that his shoulder heals properly.

According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, Thurman had an MRI on his shoulder and it showed no signs of damage, so the hope is that he’ll be able to rest it and resume training after a couple of weeks. Thurman’s adviser Al Haymon has a date in October on a Showtime televised card that he plans on having him on.

The injury unfortunately likely means that Thurman won’t be put in with anyone solid that could potentially cause his shoulder injury to flare up again. This will probably be another tune-up for Thurman like his last couple of fights against Julio Diaz and Jesus Soto Karass.

Last year, Thurman had a tough fight against Diego Chaves in which Thurman was really pressed hard in the early part of the fight after getting hit hard by Chaves a number of times. Thurman was forced to adjust by using movement to out-box Chaves until stopping him in the 10th round.

Thurman’s shoulder injury hurts his chances of being in the running for Mayweather Jr’s fight near year in early 2015. Mayweather still doesn’t have an opponent picked out as of yet. It’s not probable that Thurman would have gotten the fight against him even if he’d not suffered the shoulder injury, because Thurman hasn’t beaten any big names yet for him to get a fight against Mayweather. He’s kind of still seen an unproven fighter in the eyes of a lot of boxing fans.

Thurman’s adviser Al Haymon needs to take a chance with him by upping the level of opposition that he’s been putting him in with if he wants to get him a title shot against Mayweather before he retires.
