Is Shawn Porter vs. Keith Thurman the next big mega fight ?

By Cameron Gillon: Pending if both fighters keep winning. Many fans, trainers, fighters have tipped Shawn Porter and Keith Thurman to be the next stars of the welterweight division once Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao hang the gloves up and retire. These two young fighters have plenty of boxing ability, power and defensive use.

At this moment in time Shawn Porter’s career is definitely picking up quicker than Keith Thurman’s career. Porter  currently holds a world title in the IBF championship. He has notable wins of Devon Alexander and Pauli Malignaggi. Keith Thurman currently holds the WBA interim welterweight title and is ranked number 1 in the WBA ranks. Which means he is mandatory for that title and is currently waiting to get a shot at the title which is held currently by Mayweather Jr.

Both fighters are undefeated. Shawn Porter has a upcoming title bout this Saturday with British fighter Kell Brook. This is possibly Porter’s toughest fight thus far of his career. Brook is unbeaten in 32 fights and has been waiting for a shot at this title for a while now as he pulled out a few times due to injury against previous champions before Porter. If Porter gets through that fight it will put him in with the Mayweather Jr sweepstakes. That fight may not be likely to happen as Mayweather will be looking for the big money fights. He will only have two fights before he retires after his next fight with Marcos Maidana and seeing Porter getting one of them is unlikely unless he beats a Pacquiao, Amir Khan or Maidana after Brook.

Thurman is the most avoided fighter in the welterweight division. Even Shawn Porter’s father has claimed and believes Thurman is being ducked and no fighters want to fight him due to his immense power and got such a unknown fighter right now in casual fans and a big risk for such a small benefit many of the top fighters won’t fight him. Maidana was supposed to fight Thurman a while ago but Maidana walked in another direction, and Maidana if you think is a big brawler and will throw bombs and likes getting a scrap avoids Thurman it just shows how dangerous opponent Thurman is. Thurman has been open in the past about wanting to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr as he believes he has the keys to dethroning Mayweather and taking over as the king of boxing even if he doesn’t get the fight he believes he will be the one to beat every fighter and unify the division. Of course he isn’t the only one in the past we have heard say these type of things about Mayweather tp go on and get beat by Floyd but you have to like his confidence and belief.

There is one opponent Porter and Thurman have in common and that’s Julio Diaz. Shawn Porter has fought Diaz twice. The first fight ended in a draw and then a rematch was made where Porter won on a unanimous in a 10 round bout. When Thurman faced Diaz earlier this year, Thurman destroyed him the 3rd round by KO and Diaz then retired. Many opinions on this have said Thurman making such easy work of Diaz when Porter struggled with him means Thurman is a much much better fighter than Porter.

Thurman is currently out injured with a shoulder injury and was due to fight on the undercard of the Mayweather vs. Maidana rematch but is now scheduled to fight Roberto Garcia in October in what should be another knockout victory for Thurman.

A fight between Porter and Thurman was supposed to happen in January and Thurman was pushing for that fight but Porter didn’t want it at this time and claimed it would be a bigger fight in the future when both have world titles, you could imagine how big a fight between these two would be if they stayed unbeaten and Porter had the IBF title and Thurman got hold of the WBA.
