By Cameron Gillon: WBA and IBO middleweight champion Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin was interview this past week about his upcoming bout against Mexican Marco Antonio Rubio which has been built as ‘Mexican Style.”

To date this is Golovkin’s biggest challenge in his career so far one though that Golovkin should come out of with a knockout victory. Rubio has been in the ring with some big fighters in Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Kelly Pavlik in which Rubio lost both fights. He still yet is to hold a world title. He has a big chance here against Golovkin but this is another fight where Marco is going to be going up against the best in the division and likely going to lose. Rubio is a heavy hitter and Golovkin has never been put down in his entire career as a professional and a amateur so the likelihood of a KO in this is high but only in Golovkin’s favour.

In the interview Golovkin was asked without looking past his next fight to much on what he would like to do in the next step in his career. Golovkin simply answered he isn’t looking anywhere past Rubio right now but after this fight he would like a big PPV showdown with a top fighte. GGG deserves a shot. He is the best middleweight in the division and there is no doubt in my eyes he will clear out this division and unify the belts before moving up to super middleweight. Golovkin was then asked what fighters he would like to fight with one being WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto. Cotto recently beat Sergio Martinez in June to capture the WBC title. Cotto looked good in that fight knocking Martinez down three times in the 1st round before Martinez trainer stopped the fight in the 10th round. It’s hard to see Golovkin getting a shot at Cotto even if he beats Rubio and put himself as Cotto’s mandatory challenger. Cotto you can argue can choose who he fights now and a fight with Saul Alvarez in May. It’s looking more than likely with Cotto and Canelo looking at easy fights to finish the year out.

The next was Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. This fight between Golovkin and Chavez was looked to be a done deal for July this year before Chavez pulled out due to contract issues. This would of been a good fight as Chavez can take a punch and is heavy handed and would of hit Golovkin with some big body shots and test GGG. Chavez would not be going down in 3-4 rounds like all the other opponents Golovkin has faced recently. So this is a big fight for both, but Chavez looks to be no where in the boxing world right now.

And finally Golovkin said he has a hope to fight Mexican star Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. Now I believe Canelo would face Golovkin. Canelo hasn’t yet ducked a opponent. He’s faced Austin Trout when no one thought he would; he took on Erislandy Lara which in many fans eyes wouldn’t happen but Canelo then fought him and beat them both. yYu can argue he lost the fights but he has the wins on his record, and this fight would be a big big ppv fight. This is more than likely going to happen than the other two as Alvarez seems to be wanting to fight the best and if he beats Miguel Cotto he would win the WBC title if the fight was for the belt and Golovkin would then get a shot at Canelo unless Canelo did eventually vacate it. But end of the day Golovkin needs to be tested against a elite fighter like them as he seems to be no where near a move up to 168 to face Andre Ward as of yet.
