Garcia destroys Salka!

Garcia Salka Fight Night-0011(Photo Credit: Amanda Kwok / SHOWTIME) By Bob Smith: In a dominant win last night, WBA, WBC and Ring magazine light welterweight champion Danny Garcia defeated Rod “lightening rod” Salka by a 2nd round knockout. After a quiet round one, in which Rod Salka circled the ring, jabbed and used movement to avoid the left hook of Garcia, Danny Garcia dominated the second round with counter punching and landed the much harder shots to put Salka down three times and achieve the TKO victory.

It was a fight that was hard to watch after the first knockdown from Garcia, who hurt Salka a great deal with a punch in the earlier part of the second round. Salka immediately looked to the referee for protection against Garcia and ended up going down about five seconds later. Following this knockdown, Garcia focused on putting Salka away, and consistently threw very big punches while Salka attempted to hold as much as he could to stave off the attack and to regain some energy and balance.

After the second knockdown, Garcia obliterated Salka much like Drago did against Rocky (in the early part of their fight) in the movie. The referee kept looking to step in and finally Garcia clocked Salka with a major shot and sent him to the canvas, which coincided with his corner throwing in the white flag of surrender.

It was a major victory for Garcia, for who can be faster than lightening itself and defeat it? Who can hope to defeat a KO artist who nearly defeated the older brother of Canelo Alvarez (were he not robbed by the judges), and thus showed that he was stronger and a better boxer than any other junior middleweight other than Mayweather? And to do this while only a junior welterweight, wow!

Unfortunately, like many I had bet big on a Salka KO that failed to materialize. It just goes to show that anything can happen in boxing on any given night, and that promoters do in fact give guys like Garcia a chance to take on the big dogs and show what they are made of. It was my rent money that is gone now, hopefully I’ll survive, but all credit goes to Garcia and the promoters for this one – anyone who can take down Rod “lightening rod” Salka in the way he did it is a true champion in my book.
