Froch vs. Chavez Jr negotiations going slow, says Hearn

froch66By Scott Gilfoid: IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn says that the negotiations are “Frustratingly slow,” Hearn told Fighthype.com when asked how the negotiations are going for a Froch vs. Chavez Jr fight.

Froch and Hearn could end up with nothing to show for the negotiations with Chavez Jr if the fight is going to be tied into a contract extension for Chavez Jr with Top Rank. Chavez Jr likely won’t sign for a fight against Froch if it means he’s going to need to sign an extension with Top Rank for the fight to happen.

Hearn needs to be thinking more of a backup plan if it looks like the fight isn’t going to happen anytime soon.

“He’ll not fight again in 2014. He’ll probably fight in January 2015. And then, Chavez, Kessler, DeGale,” Hearn said.

It’s interesting that Hearn isn’t mentioning Gennady Golokvin or the Dirrell brothers and Andre Ward as potential opponents for Froch. Golovkin is ahead in Froch’s poll on his Facebook page in a poll that Froch asked boxing fans to pick between Chavez Jr, Golovkin and DeGale.

Golovkin is No.1, Chavez Jr No.2 and DeGale a distant No.3. The fact that so few fans care to see Froch fight DeGale on his poll suggests that Hearn is going in the wrong direction with him looking to get DeGale and Kessler.

I don’t see how Hearn can make a third fight between Froch and Kessler with Kessler not having fought since last year when he was beaten by Froch. I mean, won’t the British boxing public see a third fight between Froch and Kessler as little more than a money grab if Kessler hasn’t fought in 2 years?

How do you sell a Froch-Kessler III fight with Kessler having been out of the ring for over 24 months? Kessler hasn’t fought in 15 months, and by the time Hearn goes to put them back in together, Kessler will have been inactive for 2 years or more. When you’ve got someone who has been out of the ring for as long as Kessler, it’s more like an old timer’s fight than a fight between two relevant fighters.
