Does Mayweather Promotions have a life without Floyd fighting?

floyd988By Gav Duthie: We may all be getting a little fed up of the tit for tat, handbags battle between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson on social media but something the rapper said recently made me wonder about the future of Floyd’s promotional company Mayweather Promotions. In response to a Mayweather picture posted on instagram portraying two cheques totaling over $72 million, Jackson said:

“Look [expletive] the cheque say Golden Boy. That mean you work for Oscar (De La Hoya) [expletive]?, I don’t hold grudges. I remember facts”.

This made me think about whether Mayweather Promotions would be anywhere without Golden Boy and after Floyd retires is there still life in the company without him as an active fighter.

Mayweather and Jackson background

For those who haven’t been following this story the two were very close a couple of years ago. The idea was considered that after Floyd was released from prison from his domestic abuse charge he would join up with 50 Cent to set up a boxing promoting company. Upon Floyd’s release this did not happen and Jackson went it alone creating SMS Promotions with mixed success. Since the misunderstanding the two have been at it like cat and dog.

Floyd 6th September Card

Mayweather Promotions is running a full card in Las Vegas one week before his fight with Marcos Maidana including fighters exclusive to his stable. The event is to be headlined by Super Middleweight prospect J’Lean Love.

J’Lean Love 18-0 (10) v Rogelio Medina 32-6 (26)
Badou Jack 16-1-1 (11) v Jason Escalera 15-2-1 (12)
Ronald Gavril 9-0 (7) v Thomas Falowo 12-2 (8)
Ashley Theopane 35-6-1 (11) v TBA
Ladarius Miller 3-0 (1) v TBA
Lanell Bellows 8-1-1 (6) v TBA
Andrew Tabiti 6-0 (6) v TBA

Mayweather Stable

Mickey Bay Jnr (lightweight) 20-1-1 (10)
Floyd Mayweather (welterweight) 46-0 (26)
Ashley Theopane (Welterweight) 35-6-1 (11)
Ladarius Miller (Welterweight) 3-0 (1)
Ishe Smith (Light Middleweight) 26-6 (12)
Chris Pearson (Light Middleweight) 9-0 (8)
J’Lean Love (Middleweight) 18-0 (10)
Luis Arias (Middleweight) 9-0 (4)
Lanell Bellows (Super Middleweight) 8-1-1 (6)
Badou Jack (Super Middleweight) 16-1-1 (11)
Ronald Gavril (Super Middleweight) 9-0 (7)
Andrew Tabiti (Cruiserweight) 6-0 (6)

They only have 12 fighters on their books with most of the best of them fighting next Saturday with the exception of Lightweight Mickey Bey who is likely to lose in a title shot against Miguel Vasquez on the Mayweather v Maidana undercard. Golden Boy also has a card for September 6th boasting Adrien Broner, Lucas Matthyse and the return of Andre Berto. There is no comparison to the stable of Oscar to Mayweather. Oscar seems happy to occasionally top up Mayweathers cards with fighters at present but when he eventually retires will this still be the case. You are quickly forgotten in boxing and when Mayweather’s next big payday is not forthcoming I can’t see De La Hoya being so eager to give his team fights.

I really don’t see much exciting from those 11 fighters. Ishe Smith is a former world champion but far from exciting and unlikely to get another shot. Badou Jack was set to fight James DeGale until he got knocked out inside one round. Andrew Tabiti might do well but Cruiserweight is a difficult division to support. It looks like all the hopes will be pinned on J’Lean Love and Chris Pearson but there are no guarantees with anyone. I think Mayweather should make as much money as he can as a fighter and keep a hold of those cheques because after he stops fighting I don’t think Mayweather Promotions will be a major player in the boxing game.
