By Dan Ambrose: Daniel Jacobs (27-1, 24 KOs) wants to pick up the vacant WBA middleweight title this Saturday night in his fight against #2 WBA Jarrod Fletcher (18-1, 10 KOs) of Australia, and then move onto unification fights against WBO 160 pound champion Peter Quillin and WBA champion Gennady Golovkin.
The Jacobs vs. Fletcher fight will be taking place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on the undercard of the Rod Salka vs. Danny Garcia fight.
Jacobs says he wants the Golovkin fight, but it’s hard to know if he’s just namedropping or if he’s serious about wanting to fight him. A match between him and Golovkin could prove to be a real tough one to try and put together given that Golovkin fights on HBO, and Jacobs on Showtime.
Jacobs also has Al Haymon as his adviser and he might not go for the idea of having his client fight someone that he would have little chance of beating. Haymon is very good at picking fights for his clients and making sure they’re put in the best possible position to win. You can’t really call a Golovkin-Jacobs fight as one where Jacobs would have a great chance of winning.
“I think it will be huge,” Jacobs said via Dan Rafael of ESPN. “It’s an opportunity that I would love to have to fight him. I also think that he’s already a superstar and I think I want to have the opportunity to be a superstar myself. So, I think that if I can maybe get a couple of fights, maybe Peter Quillin or someone like that and then go up to Golovkin, that’s something that I would look forward to doing.”
Jacobs might have a hard time as it is getting Quillin to take the fight with him, because he’s too busy fighting guys like Fernando Guerrero and Lukas Konecny. Quillin has a tough fight staring him in the face against WBO mandatory challenger Matt Korobov coming up, and he’ll be lucky if he can get past that opponent.
Jacobs said “I’m not really in control of who I fight. But if I had it my way I would probably get me a couple of fights just to solidify that spot and to secure my name and be considered a superstar in the division and a big play in the division as well, so we can go ahead and make the fight.”
Jacobs is telling it like it is. He doesn’t control who he fights. That’s up to his adviser and maybe Golden Boy Promotions. They’re not going to want to have Jacobs lose his title immediately after capturing it against Fletcher.
By having Jacobs hold down a belt, it’s potential bate to be used to maybe lure someone like Floyd Mayweather Jr, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Miguel Cotto into taking Jacobs on for his title. It’s highly unlikely that they’ll even let Jacobs get within 500 miles of Golovkin. They’re probably okay with Jacobs name dropping Golovkin’s name, but that’s about it.
