Carl Froch to consider retirement if fight with Chavez Jr in Vegas falls through

froch#5By Cameron Gillon: IBF and WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch has said he will consider calling it a day on his boxing career if a long awaited fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in Las Vegas falls through. Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom recently stated that talks with Chavez promoter Bob Arum at Top Rank had recently re-opened to see if they can put together a fight for January 25th 2015.

Hearn said if the fight was to be made that it wouldn’t be this year it would most definitely be in early next year. Carl Froch isn’t thinking to much about it, as he knows putting his last fight on hold for Chavez is risky due to how unreliable he has been before in pulling out of a fight with Gennady Golovkin earlier this year.

Its not surprising Carl Froch is considering retiring if he doesn’t get the fight in Vegas, as nothing other than that could top his recent win over fellow Brit George Groves in knocking him out in front of a packed 80,000 thousand people at Wembley Stadium in the 8th round. Vegas probably wouldn’t top the fight at Wembley but Froch has said all great fighters will experience fighting in the boxing capital.

Froch went on to say that a fight against his IBF mandatory James Degale doesn’t appeal to him, he says Degale isn’t good enough to motivate him to train for another fight plus he has recently had two mandatory defences in the past year against George Groves. James Degale beat Brandon Gonzales at Wembley on the undercard of Froch/Groves 2 to put himself as mandatory for the winner of that fight which was Carl Froc. Degale has been open about wanting to fight Froch to win the title rather than Froch vacating the title for Degale to having to fight a lower opposition to win the title. He’d rather face the champion.

It looks like Froch has his mind on Chavez or retiring, no doubt in my mind that Froch will retire in the next year if that’s because he doesn’t get the fight or he bows out fighting Chavez. If the fight happens its definitely not a easy win for Froch as Chavez is one of the toughest out there. He has a great chin and is a good inside fighter by throwing strong body shots which Froch doesn’t tend to like when he fights.

Sure, Froch will be able to take anything Chavez throws at his head but we have seen before Froch cant work on the inside well against Andre Ward. There was a lot of questions of whether Froch has aged and all the tough fights he has had over the years caught up with him in November 2013 after his controversial stoppage win over Groves in the 1st. But he answered the questions with a devastating right hand on Groves last May.

Mikkel Kessler is looking to return and has been vocal about having a 3rd fight with Froch seeing as it is one a piece between the two and wants that decider but it seems unlikely this fight will be made. The Likelihood is that Froch ends up facing Chavez or bows out on another fight with Groves.
