Canelo’s options for December: Andrade, Kirkland and Clottey

canelo6767By D.A: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1 31 KOs) has revealed his other 2 options for December other than James Kirkland, according to Univision Deportes and Vanguardia.mx. The other two are WBO 154 champion Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (21-0 14 KOs) and Joshua Clottey (38-4-0-1 22 KOs).

There was rumors of Andrade squaring off against Clottey next but there hasn’t been any confirmation nor any other signs pointing to that fight getting made.

Andrade a former US Olympian is in his physical prime and is coming off a brutal stoppage win over England’s Brian Rose. Clottey is coming off a win over Australian Anthony Mundine. I’m sure fans would definitely be more interested in Canelo fighting Andrade rather than Clottey simply because Andrade seems like he’d pose more of a threat than an aging Clottey.

Call me crazy but I’d bet Clottey could still beat a lot of these called “top junior middleweights”. Other than that no one really wants to see Canelo fight Clottey and definitely not on Showtime pay-per-view. Andrade on the other hand holds a legitimate title and the fight would have to be at 154 pounds and would answer questions regarding if Canelo can make 154 again.

According to Chepo Reynoso, Canelo’s manager, nothing has been finalized yet and James Kirkland is the front runner still. But should Kirkland fall through, the extra options would be Andrade and Clottey.

Andrade has fought on HBO his last couple fights and doesn’t have exclusive television rights to HBO either so it’d be a makeable fight. On top of that he’s signed to Banner promotions who has no issues with Golden boy or Showtime.

Andrade though has only had 1 decent test in Vanes Martirosyan whom he beat for the vacant WBO title. Andrade won a split decision which was a joke because Andrade clearly dominated every round after being dropped in round 1.

Then Andrade pummeled Brian Rose in a brutal fight which Rose hardly through any punches and got canned from start. While Andrade looked real good against Rose, we should not think that’s how he’d look against a live body.

Its great Andrade wants every top fighter but until then we can’t base his skills against a punching bag in Rose. But if Canelo wins his next couple fights, we definitely could be seeing Canelo fight Andrade in the future, maybe even late next year. And even possibly at Middleweight due to Canelo will eventually fight at the weight and Andrade is a big guy and tall for a junior middleweight standing at 6’1. But still count on Canelo vs Kirkland sometime in December. Stay tuned the announcements should be here soon.
