williamsBy Scott Gilfoid: Previously unbeaten #4 WBO, #6 IBF, #10 WBC Thomas Williams Jr (17-1, 12 KOs) suffered a disappointing 5th round cut stoppage tonight in losing to former WBA light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo (24-6-1, 10 KOs) at the Little Creek Casino in Shelton, Washington.

Williams Jr, an amazing talent with incredible punching power, was dominating the fight for the first 3 rounds. But the fight changed in the 4th round when he suffered a bad cut over his left eye. The blood leaked into Williams Jr’s eye, making it impossible for him to see. After the 5th round the fight was stopped on the advice of the ringside doctor.

I don’t know what happened with William Jr’s corner, because they did a horrible job in trying to stop the bleeding after the 4th round. Williams Jr came out for the 5th and the cut was immediately leaking red blood into William Jr’s left eye. He did a good job of moving around to keep from getting caught with Campillo’s jabs and power shots, but the cut was so bad that there was no way that the 26-year-old Williams Jr was going to be able to make it the full 12 rounds.

Williams Jr still had a chance of stopping Campillo Jr if the fight had been allowed to go further, but the cut was too bad for him to go without causing him major problems. It’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to cuts, and this was looked like an especially bad one.

Going into this fight, Williams Jr looked unbeatable and a sure thing to be soon fighting for a world title against the likes of IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins or WBO champion Sergey Kovalev. But some things you can’t plan for such as injuries that occur in the ring, and unfortunately for Williams Jr the cut prevented him from showing what he’s capable of doing.
