Broner open to fighting Danny Garcia if the money is right

broner67By Jim Dower: Former three division world champion Adrien Broner (28-1, 22 KOs) says he’s going to be looking to capture his 4th division world title in the near future when he goes after a world title at 140.

He’s a tune-up bout coming up on September 6th against Emmanuel Taylor (18-2, 12 KOs) at the U.S Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio. After that, Broner’s schedule is open. He says he’d fight WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia if it’s a fight that makes sense.

If the fight against Garcia makes business sense for him, Broner will take it. He’s also interested in a rematch with Marcos Maidana after he faces Floyd Mayweather Jr on September 13th.

“Everyone knows in boxing you take one fight at a time,” Broner said to Showtime. “I definitely want to win a world title at 140 so I can be a 4-time world champion in 4 different weight classes at 25. Boxing is a business. I’ve got love for a lot of fighters in the game, but boxing is a business. If it [a fight against Danny Garcia] makes sense, I’m with the money.”

A fight against Danny Garcia would be a fairly big one for Broner. It might not be a pay-per-view worthy bout, but it would be huge a fight nonetheless, as long as Broner gets past Emmanuel Taylor and looks good in that fight. It would also depend on what happens in Garcia’s next fight this year, if he does fight again in 2014.

Garcia would need to win that fight against whomever his adviser Al Haymon matches him up against. Haymon is the adviser for Broner as well, so it would come down to whether he would want to match his two fighters up against each other or not.

If he wants to continue to match Garcia against Rod Salka type fighters in order to create an unbeatable image for him, then he’s going to say no to the idea of putting him in with a guy like Broner.

Garcia can be out-boxed, as we saw in his fight against Mauricio Herrera. Garcia also struggled at times with the boxing skills of Zab Judah in their fight. Broner might be able to nullify Garcia’s offense and outpoint him.

“I feel great. I went in [against Carlos Molina] untouched and I came out untouched,” Broner said in talking about his last fight against Carlos Molina from last May. “I partied with my family and kissed my babies, and now we’re on to the next one. That’s all that I was doing. I did that and I was successful and now it’s on to another one. I had some ring rust. It means a lot [to fight Emmanuel Taylor in Cincinnati]. The home crowd is electrifying and they love me down there.”

In speaking about Taylor, Broner said “A hell of a fighter and is coming off of one of his biggest wins. It was a hell of a win. I didn’t see the fight, but I can say that the guy he beat is a tough opponent.”

Broner went on to say that he doesn’t study tape on his opposition. “No, no, no. All I do is be prepared and make my adjustments and get my victory,” Broner said. “Right now the thing for me is 140. I’m having fun at 140 and make it easy. I can make weight tomorrow. I eat what I want and I have fun.”
