trout8By Allan Fox: Former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-2, 14 KOs) will be back in the ring this Friday, August 22nd in a fight against #15 WBA Daniel Dawson (40-3-1, 26 KOs) in a scheduled 12 round bout at the Pechanga Resort & Casino, in Temecula, California, USA.

Both fighters can’t afford to lose if they want to keep their top 15 ranking, especially Trout, who has lost his last two fights against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Erislandy Lara. Trout not only lost his fight against Canelo last year in April, but he also lost his WBA title.

Trout wants to fight both Lara and Canelo again so that he can try and avenge his losses to them, but it doesn’t look like he’s going to get a rematch against them because neither guy has spoken of wanting to fight Trout again. They perhaps see Trout as being more trouble than it’s worth it at this point. Those back to back losses for Trout really took a lot of wind out of his career.

Trout and Dawson have both faced Frank LoPorto during their careers. Trout easily defeated Loporto by a 6th round stoppage in 2011, whereas Dawson was dominated by him in losing by a 12 round decision in 2010. That could mean nothing or it could suggest that Dawson might be out of his class this Saturday night when he gets in the ring with Trout.

The LoPorto fight wasn’t supposed to be a big deal for Dawson, yet he lost the fight by a fairly wide margin.

In 2010, Dawson was halted in the 10th round by former WBO light middleweight champion Sergiy Dzinziruk. That was another fight where Dawson was pretty well beaten.

Trout will need to step it up after this fight and stop taking on some better contenders if he wants to get a quick rematch Lara. That’s the only fight that Trout has a reasonable chance of getting in the future, because Canelo will likely never face him.

Trout had problems with the power of Lara and Canelo, because he didn’t have the punch resistance or the chin to make those winnable fights. Dawson isn’t a puncher like those two guys, so Trout should be fairly safe in this fight.
