berto67By Dan Ambrose: After a year out of the ring former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-3, 22 KOs) will be attempting to rebuild his shattered career on September 6th against Steve Upsher Chambers (24-3-1, 6 KOs) at the U.S. Bank Arena, in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.

The Berto-Chambers fight is scheduled for 10 rounds and it’ll be televised on Showtime along with Adrien Broner vs. Emmanuel Taylor in the main event and Lucas Matthysse vs. Roberto Ortiz in the co-feature.

Berto isn’t being matched too tough her with Chambers, as this guy has lost his last two fights against Eddie Gomez and Luis Collazo.

If Berto can’t beat a fighter in Chambers’ class then he really needs to think about hanging up the gloves for good. I doubt Berto will retire even if he loses to Chambers, but he should because he’s not going to be able to come back from yet another loss.

Berto has lost 3 out of his last 4 fights in the last three years. It’s been three years since Berto last won a fight when he defeated Jan Zaveck by a 5th round stoppage. That fight was stopped because Zaveck was unable to see out of his right eye. Zaveck was coming on at the time of the stoppage, and he would have given Berto a lot of problems.

Last year in July, Berto suffered a torn tendon in his right shoulder in the 2nd round of his fight against Jesus Soto Karass in July 2013. Berto then was forced to use his left hand for the remaining 10 rounds of the fight. He was stopped in the 12th. Not long after the fight, Berto had shoulder surgery to repair the problem, which is why he’s been out of the ring for so long.

Berto is only 30, but he’s missed a lot of action since 2012 due to the accumulating injuries. He tore a bicep in 2012. He also suffered a bicep tear in 2010.

The September 6th card would have been a lot better if Broner had been matched against Matthysse instead of Emmanuel Taylor. The card is not a great one, and really not much better than the recent Danny Garcia vs. Rod Salka and Lamont Peterson vs. Edgar Santana card.
