By Jim Dower: Tureano Johnson (15-1, 10 KO’s) rebounded from a loss to Curtis Stevenson in his last fight to defeat an over-matched Mike Gavronski (14-1-1, 10 KO’s) in a tougher than expected 10 round unanimous decision on Friday night to win the vacnt WBC Continental Americas middleweight title at the Little Creek Casino in Shelton, Washington. The final judges scores were 99-91, 99-91 and 99-91.

Gavronski, 28, gave Johnson problems in the first two rounds in using his power and size advantage to land some solid head shots. However, Gavronski soon started to fade badly, and by the 4th round he looked weak and was unable to find the same kind of power on his shots. He was basically pushing his punches from that point forward, and only capable of occasionally finding some of decent power.

In the 6th round, Gavronski’s right shoe began to fall apart on him from the bottom. He was still able to keep fighting, but the shoe issue was a definitely problem in the last four rounds. Surprisingly his trainer failed to tape up his shoe to keep it from flapping around as he moved around the ring.

In rounds 7 through 10, Johnson was able to catch Gavronski with some tremendous shots to the head. Gavronski took the shots well, but it was painful to watch. The ringside doctor checked on Gavronski in between rounds in the last three rounds of the fight at the request of the referee. The fight was allowed to continue each time, but it probably should have been halted due to the one-sided nature of it. Gavronski have virtually no chance of winning and was just soaking up punishment.

Johnson is an impressive middleweight, and with his work rate, pressure and power, he could give almost any fighter in the division huge problems.

In the co-feture, lightweight Jonathan Maicelo (18-1, 11 KOs) defeated Art Hovhannisyan (17-2-2, 9 KOs) by a 10 round split decision. The judges scored the fight 100-97, 97-93 for Macicelo and 96-94 for Hovhannisyan. It’s hard to see what the third just was looking at in the fight, because it looked like a clear cut win for Maicelo.
