Shawn Porter hoping to get Mayweather fight after Brook

porter023By Scott Gilfoid: In his media conference call today, IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KO’s) said that the guy he wants next after he beats Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KOs) is a unification fight against WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Porter isn’t overlooking Brook, but he’s not all that concerned about him. He’s studied Brook in depth and sees an upright, rigid fighter with a very basic fighting style that he’s going to expose in their fight next month on August 16th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

“I don’t consider my fights auditions, they’re performances. Yes, Floyd Mayweather is on the clock, we’re all hoping we’re next in line…I’m undefeated against undefeated boxers. I look forward to carrying my belt out of the ring August 16.”

Even if Porter doesn’t get a fight against Mayweather next, he’s still going to get something interesting, possibly a fight against Keith Thurman. Porter said he’s up for that fight as well if it’s offered to him.

A win over Thurman and Brook will definitely put Porter in a good position to get Mayweather, because he’d be pretty much the last man standing of the guys that are available to Mayweather. Amir Khan has taken himself out of the loop by failing to fight a quality opponent for the last two years since his loses to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia.

Brook said “August 16 it’s me and Shawn Porter in the ring, I’m more than ready…I think the fans around the world are going to see what I can really do and see the best of me.”

Brook wants a fight against Khan or Manny Pacquiao. I can’t see that happening. If Brook were to beat Porter, which I don’t see happening, I doubt Khan will fight him, and I definitely don’t see a Pacquiao fight taking place because Brook doesn’t have the popularity for it to be worthwhile to Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum.

They’re about to get burned big time with their fight against Chris Algieri on November 22nd, so they’re not going to want to fight another guy that doesn’t bring in the pay-per-view buys,.
