Rigondeaux-Kokietgym tickets still on sale for July 19th fight in Macao, China

rigondeaux655By Chris Williams: With just two weeks to go before the July 19th fight between Guillermo Rigondeaux (13-0, 8 KO’s) vs. Sod Kokietgym (63-2-1, 28 KO’s) at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, in Macao, Macao S.A.R., China, tickets are still available for the card.

It’s not surprising though because by sticking the fight in Macao, China, Bob Arum of Top Rank has put superb fighters like Rigondeaux in a position where they’re not able to fight in front of large crowds in the United States.

The card, if it’s going to sell out, it’ll be due to flyweight contender Zou Shiming (4-0, 1 KO’s) fighting on in against Luis De La Rosa (23-3-1, 13 KO’s) and flyweight Brian Viloria (33-4, 19 KO’s) fighting Jose Alfredo Zuniga (11-5-1, 5 KO’s).

A card like this might have sold out if they had staged it in a place like Las Vegas, Nevada or New York. But to have it take place in Macao, it’s not likely to sell out because boxing writers and fans from the United States aren’t going to be able to Floyd over in large enough numbers to help sell out this fight.

Rigondeaux is fighting would might be his last fight on his contract with Top Rank against the 37-year-old Kokietgym in what shapes up to be a bad mismatch. It’s anyone’s guess in which direction Rigondeaux will go in after his contract expires.

There’s Golden Boy Promotions and a number of other promotional companies that Rigondeaux can sign with. Showtime would likely be interested in televising Rigondeaux’s fights in the future, if HBO isn’t interested in doing so.

The problem that Rigondeaux finds himself in is the same that WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward is in right now. None of the top fighters want to face him due to his high skills. Rigondeaux wants to take on the best super bantamweights and prove himself better than the likes of Nonito Donaire a second time, but none of those fights are happening.

Here’s the other fights on the Rigondeaux-Kokietgym card:

Brian Viloria vs. Jose Alfredo Zuniga
Zou Shiming vs Luis De la Rosa
Gilberto Ramirez Sanchez vs. Junior Talipeau
Rex Tso vs. John Bajawa
Ik Yang vs. Rachamongkol Sor Pleonchit
Egor Mekhontsev vs. TBA
Kuok Kun Ng vs. Beau O’Brien
