Potential Adrien Broner opponents for September 6th

broner111By Gav Duthie: Any excitement that we had in hearing that Adrien Broner 28-1 (22) and Lucas Matthysse 35-3 (33) were both fighting on September 6 was quickly destroyed when it was confirmed they wouldn’t be fighting each other. The fact that Golden Boy Promotions aren’t putting these two together and Broner won’t be fighting on the Floyd Mayweather Jr – Marcos Maidana II bill the next week on September 13th suggests the whole card will be a pretty low key affair.

I’ve had a look into Golden Boy’s stable of fighters at Light Welterweight to speculate on who Broner may be put up against. Its pretty clear that they are still not yet comfortable putting him in at top level in his new division. It is quite likely they will put someone in there relatively similar to his last opponent Carlos Molina.

Pablo Cesar Cano 27-4-1 (20)

Cano is a relatively big name. His fight against Ashley Theopane was probably the best fight on the Mayweather-Canelo card last September. Despite a high knockout percentage Cano is not a huge puncher but he wouldn’t be one to be taken lightly. His best performance probably came when losing a close split decision to Paulie Malignaggi and he even dropped Paulie in the 11th round. Cano would be a perfect opponent for Broner to look good against. Cano often gets bad cuts and was stopped in his last fight as a result and also the same against Erik Morales.

Broner TKO 8

Fidel Maldonado Jnr 18-2 (15)

I think this one is slightly less likely. Maldonado can bang a bit, has decent speed and is a southpaw so relatively awkward. He also just won a pretty good stoppage over Luis Ramos Jnr after consecutive defeats so I don’t think Golden Boy wold fancy making cannon fodder out of him by throwing him in Broner’s direction. Maldonado has been stopped but he works hard and throws plenty of punches which may not suit Broner. If the fight were to happen I’d still fancy ‘the problem’.

Humberto Soto 62-8-2 (35)

I feel it is important that Broner is put in with good aggressive fighters to make him work harder. There is no doubting his talent but its how he responds under pressure. Soto is back to winning ways since his stoppage defeat to Lucas Matthysse a few years back. He has fairly recently moved up to the 140 lb division. Being that he started his career as a featherweight Adrien shouldn’t have too much problems with his size and strength like he did with Maidana.

Broner TKO 6

John Molina 27-4 (22)

Molina has already expressed an interest in fighting Broner. He says he would love a Matthysse rematch but would prefer Broner. In Molina’s tenth round stoppage loss against Matthysse he actually raised his stock. Until that point he was probably most famous for freezing on the world stage when Antonio De Marco blew him out in just one round. He showed great character and determination against Matthysse so this would be a fight that would probably be quite exciting for the fans but also ultimately a fight that Broner would surely win.

Broner UD 10

Zab Judah 42-9 (29)

Judah has said he will be back and although he is clearly on the decline he’s still a big name. He fought Malignaggi at 147 but he has always been at his best at 140. In the last few years he has still managed some decent wins over Lucas Matthyse and Vernon Paris, he also ran Danny Garcia pretty close. Adrien Broner was hailed by many as the next Floyd Mayweather Jr but many think he is the next Zab Judah. There’s nothing wrong with that, Zab has been a great fighter and he is a five time world champion but most would say be didn’t make the most of his talent. Like Judah, Broner also likes to pot shot and I would actually give Zab a chance with this one if his jab is better than against Maliggnaggi.

Broner UD 10

Being that the objective at he moment is to make Broner look good but still create interest I have a feeling this may point in the direction of John Molina. I just hope that the next time Broner and Matthysse are on the same card they are actually fighting each other because that would be a cracker.
