If this turns out to be true, Maidana will be coming into the fight 13 pounds lighter than the 165 pounds that he fought Mayweather at the last time they faced each last May in Las Vegas.

“Probably 55. No even. 50-52, somewhere around there,” Garcia said to esnewsreporting.com in talking about what Maidana will weigh against Mayweather.

If Maidana weighs anything less than 160 for the rematch, he’ll very likely be giving up his only real advantage in this fight, because his weight advantage was really the only thing that he had doing for him against Mayweather. With Maidana coming into the ring as a super middleweight, he weighed about the same as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez weighed for his fight against Mayweather last September, and that gave Maidana a 15 pound weight advantage of Mayweather.

Maidana enjoyed a similar large weight advantage in his fight against Adrien Broner last December when Maidana came into that fight in the 160s against Broner, who came into the ring the 140s. Maidana is someone who seems to fight better when he’s bigger than his opponents. If you take that away for his rematch with Mayweather then Maidana is going to get put in his place by Mayweather.

With Maidana weighing in the 160s for his last couple of fights, he might not be able to fight in the 150s without him being weakened. Usually when a fighter goes up in weight, they have to stay at that weight in order for them to keep their strength. If they take the weight off to fight in a lower weight class, then they end up weakened in the process.

If Maidana doesn’t care about his power then he should do as Garcia says and come into the fight with Mayweather weighing around 150, but I think he’ll ultimately regret that he did that. Mayweather will clown a 150 pound Maidana, because he’ll have nothing to keep Mayweather honest due to his power being gone.
