golovkin677By Scott Gilfoid: HBO will be televising a preview of the July 26th fight between WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin vs. former IBF/WBA strap holder Daniel Geale tonight, called “Road to Golovkin/Geale” at 12:05 a.m. ET/PT on HBO. The special will cover the preparation of the two fighters as they get ready for their clash on 7/26 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

It’s not really what I would consider a “highly anticipated fight,” unless you’re a huge fan of the 33-year-old Geale. If you’re just a regular fan of the sport, you’re probably going to be mildly interested in the Geale-Golovkin fight because it’s basically a mismatch.

Geale was already beaten last year by Darren Barker, a fighter who would have had little chance of beating Golovkin himself. Geale has struggled against the likes of Felix Sturm and Anthony Mundine during his career. These are guys that would likely be easy pickings for Golovkin.

Geale needs more power to make a fight against Golovkin a competitive, fan-friendly one, but at 33, that power won’t be there on July 26th for the Australian fighter. As such, we’re talking mismatch 100 percent in this fight unless Golovkin has a really, really bad night. Considering that Golovkin never has bad nights, I’d have to say that Geale has next to no chance of winning this fight.

The Road to Golovin/Geale special will last all of 15 minutes. That’s not a lot of time to try and promote a fight, and I’d like to have seen 30 minutes in 6 different episodes, but given that Geale lacks a huge fan base in the U.S, and the fans that do know of this fight see it roughly as a mismatch, I can see why how one Golovkin/Geale on the road episode should be sufficient.

Here are the dates that the Golovkin-Geale special will air on HBO. All of the times are ET/PT.
Other HBO playdates: July 12 (12:05 a.m.), 14 (9:45 a.m.), 16 (2:15 p.m. & 10:45 p.m.), 20 (11:45 a.m.), 22 (12:00 p.m. & 2:55 a.m.), 25 (5:30 p.m. & 1:00 a.m.), and 26 (8:45 a.m.).

HBO2 playdates: July 13 (6:15 p.m.), 15 (9:15 p.m.), 17 (5:45 p.m.) 19 (7:15 p.m.), 21 (2:50 p.m.), 23 (11:30 p.m.) and 25 (11:10 p.m.).
In the future, I’d like to see Golovkin step it up against much better competition than Geale. I don’t mind seeing Golovkin take a fight like this every once in a while, but it would be far more interesting to see him fighting Miguel Cotto, Sergio Martinez, Peter Quillin, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Sam Soliman, Erislandy Lara, Carl Froch, Andre Ward, Mikkel Kessler, James DeGale or George Groves.
