golovkin6666By Gavin “Neds” O’Connor: The future of the middleweight division is really starting to look very interesting and the prospect of Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) moving up to 168 or down to 154 is genuinely exciting and the potential match ups available are mouthwatering for him in either of those divisions if he’s willing to make the move.

Last night in Madison Square Garden, the seemingly unstoppable Golovkin successfully defended his WBA middleweight title in showcasing his power and talent in beating the tough Australian and former 3-time world champion Daniel Geale (30-3, 16 KOs) in the 3rd round TKO.

The official time of 2: 47, when the bout was stopped by referee Mike Ortega. Golovkin’s ability in cutting the ring down is an underrated tool in his arsenal as is his intelligent punching and technical ability. His critics will argue a lack of quality in past opponents that is open to debate but what is not is the fact that Golovkin was relentless and ruthless against the crafty Geale.

In no way was this Golovkin’s best performance to date, but in dispatching a fighter of Geale’s quality, who has never been beaten by way of stoppage, sends out a warning of intention loud and clear. Who will be next opponent for Golovkin is the big question. But with no restrictions due to cold war politics that have plagued other potential fights in other divisions, Golovkin’s list of potential opponents is virtually unlimited, as long as these opponents will agree to fight him. And that’s the magic question.

Golovkin has potential opponents in Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Demetrius Andrade at junior middleweight, and Peter Quillin and Miguel Cotto at 160. If Golovkin wants to move up to super middleweight, he has the option of facing Andre Ward or Carl Froch.

A win for Golovkin against anyone on the aforementioned list would announce the arrival of a genuine boxing star. Golovkin needs to make it happen.
