Golovkin: I want Cotto next!

golovkin1By Chris Williams: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KO’s) called out WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) tonight after Golovin’s 3rd round destruction of his 17th knockout victim Daniel Geale (30-3, 16 KOs) at Madison Square Garden, in New York.

After depositing a bleeding and beaten Geale on the canvas in the 3rd round courtesy of a fight hand to the head, Golovkin told Max Kellerman of HBO “Miguel Cotto. I respect his style. This is big event for boxing. I want unification fight. A lot of champions Miguel Cotto, Peter Quillin.”

Now the question is will Cotto man up and take the fight or will he go in the opposite direction to fight an easy mark picked out by his promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank or his trainer Freddie Roach. Both Roach and Arum are good and picking out opposition for their fighters; hence you see Cotto fighting 39-year-old Sergio Martinez with one good leg instead of Golovkin, and Manny Pacquiao fighting Chris Algieri. Need I say more?

Roach was said to be at Madison Square Garden tonight on a scouting run for Cotto, according to Dan Rafael. Roach said he’d never seen Golovkin before and he wanted to see him for himself in order to deem him worthy or not for Cotto’s next fight in December.

Rafael said “Freddie Roach told me has never seen GGG fight and wants to see for himself to see if it’s a fight for Miguel Cotto in Dec.”

Cotto doesn’t need Roach to tell him whether he should take the Golovkin fight or not, because he obviously watched the fight himself, because this is his main competition in the middleweight division, although I rate Peter Quillin as being just as tough as Golovkin. But Golovkin is getting all the credit right now because he’s got a string of knockouts. Quillin would be getting the same credit if he had fought the guys that Golovkin has fought.

If Cotto doesn’t take the fight with Golovkin, he’s going to end up looking scared in the minds of many boxing fans. Cotto will be seen as a secondary champion instead of a legit one.
