golovkin2By Jim Dower: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KO’s) destroyed challenger former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel Geale (30-3, 16 KO’s) in a 3rd round knockout on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Golovkin knocked Geale down twice in the fight, once in the 2nd and the final time in the 3rd round. Golovkin finished Geale with a right to the head in the 3rd that put him down on his back. Geale got back on his feet but the referee Mike Ortega stopped it due to him being too hurt. The official time of the stoppage was at 2:44 of the 3rd round.

On the actual knockout blow, Golovkin was hit first by a hard right hand by Geale that snapped Golovkin’s head back violently, but he was still able to throw his own right hand that Geale wasn’t expecting. The shot dropped Geale like a cannon and there was no way he was going to survive that show even though he did get up. Geale was staggering and shaking his head after he got back up.

Golovkin said after the fight “I want unification fight. A lot of champions Miguel Cotto, Peter Quillin.”

Golovkin ruled out him going up to super middleweight. He said he wants to clean out the 160 pound division.

When asked who he wants next, Golovkin said “Miguel Cotto. I respect his style. This is big event for boxing.”

For Geale, this was the first time in his career that he’d been stopped. It’s shocking that he was stopped so soon in the fight because Geale has been able to go the distance with everyone he’s faced.

The win for Golovkin was his 17th consecutive knockout.

#2 WBC heavyweight contender Bryant Jennings (19-0, 10 KOs) outworked previously unbeaten #3 WBC Mike Perez (20-1-1, 12 KOs) in beating him by a 12 round split decision. The final judges’ scores were 114-113, 115-113 for Jennings and 114-113 for Perez.

There was a controversial point deduction by referee Harvey Dock in the 12th round when he took a point away from Perez for the use of the head without giving a previous warning about it. That point cost Perez the fight because the fight would have ended up as a draw if not for that. The referee perhaps forgot that he needed to Perez before taking a point away.

Perez dominated the first 6 rounds with his bigger shots, and his cleaner landing shots. But in the second half of the fight, Perez gassed out badly and spent most of the remainder of the fight holding and pushing. Perez looked overweight and like he’d only trained for 6 rounds.

While Jennings got the victory, he was hardly impressive. He appeared afraid much of the fight, and he was beaten to the punch in almost every round. The only reason Jennings won the fight was because Perez gassed out so badly. It’s hard to see Jennings being able to deal with guys like Bermane Stiverne, who doesn’t get tired and how punches harder than Perez, and Deontay Wilder.
