Frankie Gomez dominates Vernon Paris

By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten light welterweight Frankie Gomez (18-0, 13 KO’s) remained unbeaten with his toughest test of his career in beating Vernon Paris (28-2, 16 KOs) by a 10 round unanimous decision on Friday night at the Fantasy Springs Casino, in Indio, California, USA.

The final judges’ scores were 100-89, 100-89 and 100-89. Gomez knocked Paris down in the 4th round, but was unable to finish him off.

Most of the rounds were identical with the 22-year-old Gomez, who looked like junior middleweight after he rehydrated, charging Paris and throwing quick flurries. Gomez was caught frequently with hard shots while charging in, and it’s surprising that he was able to take the punches without getting knocked out because he ran into some big punches.

Had this been a more powerful puncher like Lucas Matthysse, I think Gomez would have been knocked out. He’s too wild with his attacks, and he can’t fight like that when taking on quality opposition. He got away with it tonight because Paris isn’t a huge puncher, but someone with more power will catch Gomez perfectly as he charges in and will hurt him.

Gomez is going to need to move up in weight soon because he’s huge for a light welterweight. He looked as big as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez tonight in fighting the much lighter Paris. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a 20 pound weight difference between them tonight.

All in all, a decent win for Gomez. He kind of reminds me of a bigger version of Brandon Rios. Same face first style of fighting but with a little more speed. Same defense or lack thereof.

In other action on the card, middleweight prospect Terrell Gausha (11-0, 6 KOs) defeated Ronnie Warrior Jr (15-9-1, 5 KOs) by a 1st round knockout. Gaushia nailed Warrior Jr with a big punch to the midsection that put him on the canvas. The fight was then halted.

Undefeated cruiserweight Vyacheslav Shabranskyy (10-0, 9 KOs) stayed unbeaten with 1st round knockout of Demetrius Walker (7-7-1, 4 KOs). Shabranskyy dropped the badly over-matched Walker three times before the mismatch was halted.
