Falling in love with Power

golovkin0013By Wilmar Patino: After Gennady Golovkin’s showcase of power and skill many here are quick to praise the middle weight champion, justifiably so. He is the real deal and a true prize fighter. Gennady Golovkin has great amateur credentials and seemingly is rising through the pound for pound rankings grabbing everyone’s attention along the way.

I acknowledge his talent and am becoming a real fan of his knockout power. He cuts the ring off very good and unloads bombs on his opponents when he gets the chance or creates the opportunity. Yet I myself have to be reminded of a mistake all of us make, have made, and will continue to make. The mistake I’m talking about ladies and gentlemen is…falling in love with power.

No this isn’t an article about Gennady Golovkin (Although his performance from last night introduces the subject wonderfully). No, this is an article about the excitement, adrenaline rush, shock and awe that is created by a beautiful/ugly knockout from the hands of Powerful Punchers. From George Foreman to Mike Tyson, Julian Jackson and more recently Lucas Matthysse, Ruslan Provodnikov, Sergey Kovalev, and Gennady Golovkin we have been privileged to watch gifted athletes with incredible power rack up a multitude of knockouts.

If history has taught us anything, its that it is easy to fall in love with power. Foreman seemed to be unstoppable until he ran into Muhammad Ali. Ali’s defense and rope a dope set up Foreman to punch himself out and lose the steam behind his punches, not only that but the knockout puncher ends up getting knocked out by the swift dancer. Ruslan Provodnikov landed a crushing hand to Chris Algieri in the 1st round only to get outboxed most of the fight and lose. ( controversially so, some had Provodnikov winning it) Lucas Matthysse lost a close but tough fight in 12 rounds by the hands of Danny Garcia. Matthysse was seen as a machine and I myself was a huge fan and still am. I thought he would of knocked out or at least dropped Danny Garcia to the canvas like he has with every opponent he ever faced. Instead it was Lucas Matthysse who hit the canvas and had a badly swollen eye in a bit of a clinch fest from Garcia. Now we have Sergey Kovalev and Gennady Golovkin easily wiping everyone out and obliterating anyone who gets in there way. I’m excited to see these men fight and show us incredible power and good skill. I do believe Golovkin is the more accomplished and on a higher level between the two (Kovalev and Golovkin). I will enjoy them for as long as their reign can last.

We all would love to see an indestructible fighter go through everyone and reign supreme with no stop in sight! Yet such a fighter has not existed and we must keep in mind that believing someone of that stature can roll through there division knocking out everyone without losing is fantasy. Mike Tyson sure seemed to be someone who was unstoppable, but we all saw what happened there. Even the great Duran was knocked out and we can not forget him uttering the words “No Mas” in his rematch with Sugar Ray Leonard. Not to downplay the accomplishments of all these great powerful fighters. I love them all and love there style. Many of them were truly skilled at one time or another were pound for pound #1 fighters. Some of these powerful beasts that I speak of are all time greats. So what am I getting at?

Like a mother or father that warns her/his young child about the dangers of falling in love I too am warning the fans. In the process reminding myself that it is easy to fall in love with power. Just how far can Gennady Golovkin and Sergey Kovalev go? How well will Lucas Matthysse and Ruslan Provodnikov bounce back? I don’t know, and i have high hopes for all these men in the future. I hope they all make it to the top in there careers and show us what brute strength and boxing skill can do in a prizefight for fans and the sport itself. We have seen defensive wizards throughout the years and they seem to be the fighters who dissapoint the least but are not as popular because they are not as easy to fall in love with. Its like Power is the Body and Skill (Ring I.Q.) is the Mind. Its easy to fall in love with the body until you meet someone with a better mind. So folks lets see what the future holds for these warriors and remember to hope for the best and prepare for the worst when falling in love… With Power that is!
