Canelo is one dimensional, says Lara’s trainer

canelo788By Dan Ambrose: Ronnie Shields, the trainer for Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) isn’t impressed with the boxing skills or the stamina of former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s), and Shields just sees Canelo as a one-dimensional fighter who has taken advantage of his power and size advantage over his smaller opposition during his short pro career.

Shields notes that Canelo fades quickly in his fights, and he stops throwing combinations once he starts gassing out in the second half of his fights. Canelo can still punch with major power, but he become a punch at a time fighter from the 6th round on.

“Canelo comes out the same way,” Shields said in looking at video of his fight against Austin Trout last year. “That’s one area I can take advantage of. I think Canelo’s skills are one-dimensional fighter. Trust me, Canelo is a one-dimensional fighter and not one to touch Erislandy Lara. If that was Lara right now with Canelo on the ropes, trust me, he would hit Canelo with every shot he’s going to throw, because Lara is the most accurate puncher when he’s got a guy on the ropes.”

Canelo spent half of his fight against Austin Trout with his back against the ropes after he appeared to fatigue in the 6th. Despite fighting with his back against the ropes, Canelo still got the win, but it was a closer fight than what the three judges scored it. Canelo tried to fight with his back against the ropes in portions of his bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr last September when Canelo begin to gas out, and Mayweather made him pay for it by nailing him with shots.

“He [Canelo] can’t keep punching because his stamina is not there,” Shields notes from Canelo’s fight against Trout in the second half of the fight. “So now he’s just looking for one big shot. That’s going to work perfect for us. One shot. One shot. When he’s trying to throw one shot, we’re going to be throwing 10 shots. Only his right hand. We’re going to counter the hell out of him.”

Shields noted that Canelo was throwing mostly right hands at Trout in the second half of the fight, and he feels that Lara will totally dominate Canelo if he’s only using one hand. One of the main reasons Canelo couldn’t use his left hand was because Trout was standing on the outside, so Canelo couldn’t throw his left hook to the head or body because he was too far away. It was all lead right hands from Canelo with many of them hitting air.
