broner52By Dan Ambrose: Adrien Broner (28-1, 22 KOs) is taking about bring back in the ring on September 6th instead on the Floyd Mayweather Jr – Marcos Maidana II card a week later on September 13th.

There’s still no word about who he’ll be facing, but Lucas Latthysse also reportedly will be fighting on the same date, so it’s quite possible that the rumors are true about Broner and Matthysse facing each other.

Broner said on his twitter “September6 #TheReturnOfAdrienBroner.”

If Broner doesn’t face Matthysse, Zab Judah and Josesito Lopez are also names that Broner could wind up facing. I’m more inclined to see Broner fighting one of those guys than Matthysse, even though a fight against the tough Argentinian would do far more for Broner’s sagging career than beating a well past his best Judah, and Lopez. Those are some decent fighters, but both have been exposed recently.

Now that Broner has had a tune-up fight at 140 as of his last fight against Carlos Molina last May, he really needs to get on with his career and start facing quality opposition again. Getting stuck fighting lesser fighters is a waste of time for Broner, because he needs to find out sooner rather than later if he has what it takes to compete at a high level in the light welterweight division.

As bad as Broner looked in his last fight against Molina, I think Broner isn’t cut out for 140 and will soon taste defeat. But by taking on the best in the near future, Broner can at least know for sure and then move back down to 135, if he can still make the weight.

What Broner doesn’t need is for his adviser Al Haymon to match him against soft 140 pounders for a year before having him fight his first quality light welterweight, at which point he gets battered and beaten. That won’t help him at all.

Broner needs to cut his teeth on the best right now at 140, and then jump back down to 135 if he finds out that his power doesn’t carry at this weight either. We already saw that Broner can’t fight at 147 due to him being too weak for that division. Now it’s time to find out if that’s the case at 140 as well.
