broner660By Allan Fox: Adrien Broner (28-1, 22 KOs) says he’s not sure who he’ll be fighting for his next fight on September 6th, but he said to Dan Rafael of ESPN that he’s hearing that it might be Emmanuel Taylor (18-2, 12 KOs). It won’t be former IBF lightweight champion Paul Spadafora, apparently. He’s been ruled out for some reason.

Taylor, 23, beat Karim Mayfield recently on ESPN. But in his fight before that, Taylor was easily beaten by Chris Algieri by a 10 round decision last February.

Broner’s September 6th fight will take place in his home city at the U.S. Bank Arena, in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.

He says that he’ll be a world champion by the end of 2014. For that to happen, Broner will need to get back in the ring soon after his fight against Taylor or whoever they get for him to fight on 9/6.

“I heard it could be the guy that just beat Mayfield,” Broner said to Dan Rafael at ESPN. “So if I fight him I can shoeshine his [backside]. What’s his name? I don’t know him. He’s probably a guy who got my autograph. By the end of the year, I should have a junior welterweight world title.”

Lucas Matthysse is fighting on the same card as Broner on September 6th, but against another opponent. Broner doesn’t see the point of that. He’d rather fight Matthysse on that date than someone else, he says. Al Haymon, Broner and Matthysse’s adviser, seems to have other ideas in terms of match-making.

If Showtime is going to televise Broner’s fight against a tune-up, then Haymon can get a payday for Broner then against another easy opponent, and then possibly match him against a real opponent later in the year.

Broner could be in position to fight for the WBA or WBC title if champion Danny Garcia vacates his belt. It’s still unclear whether Garcia will vacate or keep them. It’s possible he might stick it out at 140 rather than moving up in weight, because he has such a good thing going at light welterweight. If he moves up in weight, Garcia will need to prove himself against a whole new class of fighters.
