algieri777322By Chris Williams: Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs) is so confident that he’s going to beat the 35-year-old Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) that he already has who in mind that he’d like to fight in his first fight after the Pacquiao fight.

Algieri wants to fight WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) in what would be a unification match. Algieri sees weakness in Pacquiao in terms of size, skills and age that he’ll be exploiting on November 22nd in their fight at the Venetian Casino & Resort, Macao, Macao S.A.R., China.

“That’s where we’re looking [Mayweather],” Algieri said to RingTV.com.

Algieri sees a fight between him and Mayweather as being the next logical step after Pacquiao and the only one that makes sense for him to take. The biggest money fight out there would be a match-up between him and Mayweather, unless Bob Arum of Top Rank is interested in letting Pacquiao fight Algieri a second time.

You’ve got to believe that there’s a rematch clause in the contract for the Pacquiao-Algieri fight that will lock Algieri into giving Pacquiao a rematch. Pacquiao will have to fight Algieri again if he gets beaten by him, because he won’t be able to walk away and continue fighting Arum’s guys like Tim Bradley, Brandon Rios, Mike Alvarado and Juan Manuel Marquez without taking a huge hit in popularity.

What could hurt Algieri’s chances of getting a Mayweather fight is if he’s going to be promoted by Arum for a certain amount of fights as part of the deal for him getting a fight with Pacquiao. We haven’t heard whether Algieri will be tied to Top Rank for 2-3 fights after the Pacquiao fight.

A situation like that will make it likely impossible for Algieri to get a fight against Mayweather until he’s completed his commitment to Top Rank. Mayweather might not be around by the time Algieri does go through that many fights though.

Algieri sees Pacquiao as someone he’ll have little problems out-boxing, and he also thinks he can possibly knock the 35-year-old Filipino star out. Pacquiao has been knocked out 3 times during his career, he points out, and he could be the guy to give him another knockout loss if he gets careless in the ring.
