taishanBy Dan Ambrose: 7-foot heavyweight Taishan Dong (1-0, 1 KO’s) won his pro debut last Friday night in stopping Alex Rozman (2-7, 1 KOs) in the 2nd round of a scheduled 4 round bout at the Longshoremen’s Hall, in San Francisco, California, USA.

The huge 287 pound Taishan knocked Rozman down three times in the fight before the fight was halted in the 2nd round after the third knockdown.

Taishan dropped Rozman once in the 1st round from a stiff jab that was the equivalent of a power punch. In the round, Taishan connected with another stiff jab that dropped Rozman. Moments later, Taishan flattened Rozman with a hard right hand to the head. The referee Edward Collantes had seen enough at this point and halted the fight at 1:58 of the round.

With his size, excellent jab and powerful right hand, Taishan is someone that could develop into a good heavyweight in the future. He’s someone in the Nikolay Valuev mold with his size and speed. But Taishan has a lot more power than Valuev, and he could develop into a good heavyweight if they can develop him.

Taishan showed last night that he can hurt you with little more than a jab due to his huge frame and the power that he has. Just by having him use his jab more, he’d dominate a lot of the heavyweights in the division.

Obviously his defense needs a lot of work, because Rozman was able to connect with some decent shots when he got in punching range. Taishan needs to be taught to tie up his opponents when they get close to him, because he doesn’t have the inside game to be trading shots at close range.

Taishan originally comes from Beijing, China, and he’s someone that originally started out playing basketball. But he had more of a desire to box rather than play basketball, so he quickly abandoned that sport.
