floyd7712By Gavin”Neds” O’Connor: Is it time to evaluate (I think so) the sport of boxing as the leading lights the marquee fighters edge closer to well earned retirement and future hall of fame statues. Who will be the next-generation Floyd Mayweather Jr or Manny Pacquiao. So many young fighters in boxing history have promised so much and delivered so little it makes it hard to throw your hat in the ring and pick one.

There are some who standout more Than others and the welterweights have more than there fair share a present truly the new heavyweights. The current front runners are the 26 year old hard hitting IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (24-0-1), with the combination of speed and KO power Keith Thurman (23-0), both one big fight away from stardom or exposure time will tell.

On to the lower weights and the technical brilliance of the young WBA/WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (13-0), or the tough as teak Belfast boy Carl Frampton (18-0, 13 KO’s).

Moving back up the weights and the best bet of a boxing poster boy maybe former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s), the young Mexican and the only new pay-per-view star at the moment has the potential and a future fight with the (god of war ). And then there’s WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) with a locker full of power and no defeats. These two fighters would go a long way to cement their reputation and star appeal further.

Sadly last and least, the heavyweights, the division that once burned the brightest with the names of the titans of the sport is now a dim light and the future looks bleak. Andy Ruiz Jr (21-0 ko15, 15 KO’s) looks the most viable heavyweight prospect at present good combinations fast hand speed is he the real deal we don’t yet know. It will be interesting to see witch fighters stands up and grasps the opportunities and the glory but the burning question is who has the keys to the kingdom.
