murray555By Scott Gilfoid: #2 WBC, #3 WBA Martin Murray (27-1-1, 12 KO’s) weighed in on Friday for his clash on Saturday night against Max Bursak (29-2-1, 12 KO’s). Murray, who believes that he’s got the talent to beat WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto with no problems, weighed in at 159. Bursak weighed 160.5.

The fight will be taking place at the Casino de Monte Carlo Salle Medecin, Monte Carlo, Monaco. Bursak lost his last fight to Jarrod Fletcher earlier this year. It’s kind of perplexing why a middleweight contender this long in the tooth and ranked as high as he is by the WBA and WBC is fighting a guy coming off of a loss the way Bursak is. It’s very strange, because usually once guys fight for world titles, they continue to fight opposition that are winning their fights, not losing them. It strikes me as a little strange, and more than a little self-defeating.

Murray should at least be looking to fight the likes of Daniel Jacobs, Marco Antonio Rubio, David Lemieux, Curtis Stevens, Matt Korobov, Hassan N’Dam, Felix Sturm, Jermall Charlo or Billy Joe Saunders. I mean, Bursak? I’m not really understanding the match-making that’s being done for Murray nowadays. I know it’s his fault, but it’s so, so sad to see him being matched against guys coming off of a loss and against fighters like Ishmael Tetteh.

The good thing about Murray being matched up against Bursak is that he’s 100 percent guaranteed to look like a champion against him. The bad thing is it doesn’t do much for Murray’s cache in the middleweight division. I mean, Murray can’t stand up and crow after a win over someone like Bursak, because no one will take notice of a win of this kind.

The kind of attention fight will draw is mostly wonderment about why Murray is facing fringe contenders and 2nd tier opposition. Ever since his loss to Sergio Martinez last year, Murray has been taken backwards with him being matched against 39-year-old Sergey Khomitsky, Tetteh and now Bursak.
