Martinez had to labor for 12 rounds to earn a close decision against Murray, and it was one of Martinez’s worst performances in his career because Murray looked so average.

Martinez will get his chance on Saturday to show Cotto just how wrong he was in underestimating him when the two fighters go at it in Madison Square Garden in New York. If Martinez’s knee injury has healed enough to where he’s 75% of what he was before, then Cotto is going to have a lot of problems on Saturday. He doesn’t have the size, reach or the mobility to fight a guy like Martinez.

“Miguel Cotto believes that I am ripe for the picking and that my age has finally caught up with me,” said Martinez. “What he doesn’t realize is that for the Martin Murray fight, I had many injuries going into the fight. I still came out victorious in that fight but Miguel Cotto thinks I’m on the decline, which is the only reason I believe he chose to face me now. I want to prove him wrong in thinking that I’m not an elite fighter,” said Martinez.

Cotto wants the fight just so that he can add the WBC middleweight title to his possession because it would be his 4th division world title. When you get a fighter who is looking to add meaningless belts in order to validate their careers, it frequently leads to problems because those fighters are moving into weight classes that their bodies really aren’t meant to be fighting in.

“He [Cotto] will not become the world middleweight champion by defeating me.” Martinez said. “The only way I see this fight ending is with Miguel Cotto being knocked out. I cannot see the fight going past nine rounds, Miguel Cotto says Madison Square Garden is his home, but come June 7th he will be evicted and I will prove that I am one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world,” said a confident Martinez.”
