kessler6743By Scott Gilfoid: Mikkel Kessler’s promoter Kalle Sauerland says that Kessler wants to fight a third fight with IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch, and that Froch promised him the fight. Thus far the two fighters have faced each other twice with Kessler winning the first fight in April 2010, and Froch winning their rematch three years later in May of 2013.

“Kessler fancies the winner here tonight. Carl promised it; we’d look forward to it,” Sauerland said to IFL TV.

I don’t know how you can sell a third fight between Froch and Kessler given the fact that Kessler hasn’t fought since his loss to Froch a year ago. I mean, how would that look with Froch deciding he wants to fight a guy who hasn’t fought in a year and a half.

Instead of fighting Andre Ward, the best fighter in the super middleweight division, Froch would be facing a guy who lost his last fight and who has fought only 4 times in the past 3 years. I know Kessler wants the fight with Froch, but can’t he at least get back in the ring and face some contenders to make the third fight look more legit? I really don’t see fans being eager to see Froch fight Kessler now because of his inactivity.

Kessler looked demotivated in the rematch, and he seemed to not be into the fight mentally for the first half of it. And while Kessler did giving it a good shot in the second half when he rallied, he still ended up losing the

If Froch promised to give Kessler a reach then he should have at least set up some conditions in order for him to get the rematch, such as Kessler staying active instead of just sitting around for over a year until a rematch is given to him.

It’s going to be interesting to see whether Froch’s promoter does in terms of the Kessler rematch. Does Hearn go for it and rent out Wembley Stadium thinking that it’ll sell out like the Froch vs. George Groves fight from last Saturday, or does he tell Kessler to get back in the ring and start taking on some names so that their fight doesn’t end up taking place in front of an empty stadium.
