Robert Garcia: Mayweather beats Cotto at 160

floyd5444By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Robert Garcia believes that the Freddie Roach trained WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KO’s) would still come up empty if he were to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KO’s) today at 160. Garcia doesn’t see it being any different than when Mayweather defeated Cotto at 154 two years ago in their fight in May of 2012.

“I think Mayweather beats Cotto at 160. Sure, that would be Mayweather’s 6th world title,” Garcia said to esnewsreporting.com.

Mayweather beat Cotto by the scores of 118-110, 117-111, and 117-111 in their fight two years ago. And that was with Mayweather fighting Cotto’s fight to give him a handicap. In a rematch, Mayweather would focus on his defense and make it difficult for Cotto to land his shots.

Robert Garcia was right about Chris Algieri beating Roach-trained fighter Ruslan Provodnikov last Saturday night. Garcia predicted the outcome. You got to think that Garcia knows what he’s talking about.

It’s difficult to argue with Robert Garcia about Mayweather beating Cotto again, because he wouldn’t be as vulnerable to his left hooks like Sergio Martinez was last week. Cotto had the perfect guy in front of him in that fight to make him look good. Not only was Sergio coming off of a 14 month layoff, but he also was coming off of two knee surgeries, and was wearing knee braces on both knees. This is in addition to him being 39-years-old. Cotto looked good against a 39-year-old, but he didn’t look good against Mayweather.

Cotto telegraphs his left hook too much now, and he’s become totally reliant on throwing that shot. If he tried to come out using that one move against Mayweather, he’d get nailed weight right hands to the head all night long and likely get knocked out quickly. Roach has made Cotto one dimensional since he started training him.

Mayweather isn’t currently in the running for Cotto’s next fight in December though. Cotto’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank is interested in matching him against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Tim Bradley. Mayweather is no longer an option for any of Cotto’s future fights because of him going back with Top Rank.
