Roach thinks Mayweather won’t fight Cotto again

floyd333By Chris Williams: Freddie Roach would like it if Floyd Mayweather Jr. were to move up in weight to challenge his fighter WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto for his newly won 160-pound title for his next fight, but Roach doesn’t think Mayweather will agree to take a second fight with Cotto, even though Mayweather already proved himself to be the superior fighter to Cotto two years ago.

Roach thinks that with the way that Cotto beat up Sergio Martinez last Saturday, it’ll have Mayweather not interested in tempting fate to get in the ring with Cotto a second time.

“He [Mayweather won’t fight anyone else,” Roach said. When asked if Mayweather will agree to fight fight Cotto at 160, Roach said “I don’t think so. He’ll [Mayweather] come up with some excuse.”

Mayweather would have no problem fighting Cotto, but I’m not sure that he’ll give him the fight because he’s promoted by Top Rank promoter Bob Arum now. That might be the deal-breaker for Cotto. If he were a free agent and not attacked to Arum and his cards, Mayweather would probably throw him a bone and let him have a second fight. But Cotto would have to accept the reality that he would be the B-side of the equation once again. He wouldn’t be calling the shots in terms of the purse split, glove type, catch-weight, if any, and who comes out last. Those things would obviously be for Mayweather to decide. If really wants the fight, he’d agree to whatever Mayweather requests.

It would be interesting to see how well Mayweather neutralizes Cotto’s left hook. Roach would have to come up with a little better game plan to tell Cotto ‘Throw the old left hook’ against Mayweather, because the simplistic idea would be a loss. Right off the bat, Cootto’s left hook would be totally neutralized to the point where he’d be lucky if he landed one during the entire fight.

Roach would have to abandon that idea and come up with something new if he didn’t want Mayweather to clown Cotto for 12 rounds. It would be much worse than last time for Cotto because Mayweather would fight defensively in this fight, and he’d have Cotto missing wildly and corkscrewing himself into the canvas with his wild swings and misses with his left hooks.
