By Rocky Esposito: Miguel Cotto (39-4 / 32 KOs) defied the Las Vegas odd-makers, many skeptics, and Boxing history alike last night by putting on a dominating, one-sided performance vs Sergio Martinez (51-3 / 28KOs). Cotto is now the new “WBC and Ring Magazine Middleweight Champion of the World”, all via a 10th Round TKO. Cotto also is now the first Puerto Rican in Boxing history to win a World Title in four different weight divisions.

Miguel started the fight off on fire, scoring three knock-downs in the 1st Round alone. Sergio (to his credit), was able to survive the 1st Round onslaught and make it out of the round. However, Sergio was never able to fully recover throughout the course of the fight.

Every time Martinez would try to really exchange with Cotto, Cotto’s power would stun Martinez and halt any real follow-up attack. Cotto was well in command of all the rounds. In the 9th Round, Cotto scored another Knock Down and Martinez’s trainer, (Pablo Sarmiento) wisely did not let Sergio come out for the 10th Round. *All three judges had identical scores of 90-77, a Boxing Shut-Out for Cotto.

Now that the fight is over, and Miguel Cotto is the new (WBC) and (The Ring Magazine) Middleweight Champion of the World, who does he possibly fight next? The rumor mill is a blaze with possibilities! And, one good thing, he is not tied to HBO or Showtime, which means he can fight anyone that he desires (if they are willing).

Does Miguel fight Gennady Golovkin (29-0 / 26KOs) for his (WBA) Middleweight Title belt? Or, does he await the winner of Canelo vs Lara? Does Floyd (Money) Mayweather (46-0 / 26KOs) entertain a Cotto rematch now? It would be a certain Mega Fight and PPV smash. Also, I am sure the WBC Middleweight Championship belt is tempting for Floyd. I would also like to add the current WBO Welterweight Champion of the World Manny Pacquaio (56-5-3 / 38KOs) to the list, but this is doubtful due to the fact that both fighters are now being trained by Freddie Roach.

What a difference one fight can make in a Boxer’s career. Miguel Cotto showed his A side tonight, that’s for sure. Who do you think Cotto should fight next? God Bless!
