Mayweather’s fight dates

By Wilmar Patino: Today I’d like to discuss a topic that hasn’t been discussed as of yet on this site. Many of you who are familiar with my work know that I am not a biased writer. Never have been and never will be. I do not like to discuss Floyd Mayweather Jr or Manny Pacquiao due to the excessive articles written on both fighters.

Yet this time I tried to think a little out the box and decided to talk about the month of May, and Mayweather’s recent history in that particular month. We all know Floyd fights on two dates every year which is on May and September. I have always researched the subjects in which I write on and take time in crafting my articles. I haven’t written in a while because when I decide to write I like to offer a different perspective on the matter at hand and like to engage my readers in discussions and debates.

When we think of Mayweather (inside the ring), we think of defense, pure boxing skills, and dominance. Something in which Floyd has represented well in his previous fights most notably against Canelo and Marquez, which leads me to speak of the following. When we look into Mayweather’s fights in September the most recent bouts have been against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Victor Ortiz. If we look for a pattern we find that Mayweather is at his absolute sharpest in September. Maybe due to the warm up he had the previous May. Against Canelo and Marquez, we saw Mayweather pretty much dominate every single round and with Ortiz he scored a knock out (controversy or not). Yet if we take a step back and look at his past opponents in May we may find something rather interesting.

-May 5th 2007- Oscar De La Hoya vs Mayweather. We all remember this event and its conclusion. Some had Oscar winning a close decision, others scored a draw, and the majority had Floyd winning it. Floyd won by split decision. Oscar found success with the jab and some minor success with the body. The key here and the pattern you will find that coincides is Floyd’s opponents finding success coincidentally on the Month of May. Let’s have a closer look.

-May 1st 2010- Shane Mosley vs Mayweather. In Mayweather’s very next fight that took place in the month of May he took on Mosley. Although Mayweather dominated the last 10 rounds we must remember that the first 2 rounds were rather interesting. Especially the 2nd round that found Mosley connecting a hard straight righ hand square on Mayweather’s chin. Later on came another crushing right hand that buckled Mayweather’s legs for a very brief moment. This is no knock on Mayweather’s skills because he clearly showed he’s superior in that fight, but for a couple of minutes in round 2, Mosley was able to find some success.

-May 5th 2012- Miguel Cotto vs. Mayweather. In the following match that Mayweather took on Cinco de Mayo we found ourselves watching a rather competitive fight. Cotto gave Floyd a good tough fight. Floyd showed why he was still the pound for pound champ, but not without taking some damage in the process. We witnessed how Mayweather bled from his nose for the first time. Cotto had found some success in stuffing shots to Mayweather’s face.

-May 3rd 2014- Marcos Maidana vs Mayweather. Coming into this fight many experts and fans alike believed that Mayweather would school Maidana and possibly have an even easier time handling the Argentinian slugger than he did with Canelo. So the bell rang and we found ourselves watching another competitive fight. One judge scored it a draw. Of course in the end the right man got the decision but that didn’t go without having some moments where he seemed to struggle with the Argentine champion. Once again Marcos Maidana was able to find some success in outworking Floyd in some of the rounds.

Now don’t get me wrong, this has not always been the case. Between Cotto and Maidana Mayweather faced Robert Guerrero on May 4th, 2013. The Ghost Guerrero didn’t seem to find any success against Floyd. So I’m not saying it’s a given that Floyd struggles in May or anything. I’m not a guy who’s big on theories. I will say this though. If we look into Mayweather’s recent history of fights in May we find 4 of his 5 last opponents finding the most success. So I ask my fellow readers and boxing fans, for the sake of discussion and debate… Is the month of May the best time for an opponent to face Mayweather Jr? What do you think?
