Maidana’s adviser says Mayweather’s management hasn’t contacted them yet about rematch

maidana5By Dan Ambrose: Sebastian Contursi, the adviser for former WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s), says that the rumors that have been floating around recently about a Maidana vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr rematch are totally untrue, as there’s been no contact from Mayweather’s management about putting together a rematch for September 13th.

Maidana and his team are obviously interested in that fight very much, because they feel that they beat Mayweather last May in their fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. They want to prove for a second time they’re better than Mayweather.

Contursi said “there hasn’t been any negotiation or contact” from Mayweather’s management about a rematch as of yet.

Mayweather’s next opponent could be anyone at this point. You’d have to think that someone like Miguel Cotto would be a strong candidate to get the fight unless he chooses to face Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, which would be a more winnable fight for Cotto than it would be if he were to face Mayweather a second time. The other options for Mayweather is Danny Garcia, Shawn Porter, and Keith Thurman.

The choices are pretty limited as you can see. Porter, Thurman and Garcia are opponents without large fan bases, and it’s unlikely that Mayweather will be able to attract a lot of fans by fighting any of those guys. It’s too early in the careers of those fighters for them to be popular enough to bring anything to Mayweather.

Maidana probably is the best option for Mayweather’s next fight unless he wants to face someone like Manny Pacquiao or Tim Bradley. I doubt either of those fights will happen because it’s not likely that Mayweather would want to work with Top Rank. Bradley probably wouldn’t bring much more to a Mayweather fight than Porter, Garcia or Thurman, so that’s a waste of time for him.
