By Scott Gilfoid: Looking considerably smaller than IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (62-3, 52 KO’s), the 6’4 ½” Kubrat Pulev (21-0, 11 KO’s) droned on about wanting extra drug testing for his title challenge on September 6th at the O2 World Arena, Altona, Hamburg, Germany.

The two fighters met on Wednesday in Hamburg, Germany in their initial press conference to publicize their fight, and the 33-year-old Pulev spent much of the time talking about wanting random drug testing instead talking about the actual fight. Wladimir, 6’6”, finally got tired of Pulev’s bellyaching about the extra drug testing that he wanted, and told him that he could always not take the fight if he’s worried that much.

That kind of shut Pulev up at that point, because he beat 42-year-old Tony Thompson to earn the shot, and it was tough fight for Pulev. Had it been someone like Deontay Wilder, we’d likely be seeing Pulev on the sidelines and Deontay I the spotlight.

Here’s some of the exchanges between the two fighters at the press conference:

“For a heavyweight boxer Kubrat Pulev got the right size, weight, and also technique. In addition, he is very motivated,” Wladimir said. “Pulev has already defeated boxers who were taller than me. He is the best heavyweight boxer after the champion.”

Besides his tougher than expected fight with Thompson, Pulev has victories over the 6’7” Alexander Dimitrenko, 6’4” Travis Walker, 6’7” Alexander Ustinov, and 6’4 ½” Maksym Pedyura. However, Pulev has never beaten anyone that you could call a good fighter. Thompson was decent, but old as heck and out of shape. He was recently beaten worse by Carlos Takam than what Pulev did to him.

“I am tested for the use of illicit substances at least six times a year,” Pulev said. “It’s unfair if Klitschko won’t pass the same tests that I do…if you don’t take the test, you’re not a correct person.”

At that point Wladimir got tired of Pulev’s complaining about the drug testing and said “If you don’t want to fight, you can stay at home.”

I have a feeling this is going to be a one-sided fight for as long as it lasts with Wladimir totally dominating the light hitting Pulev. If Pulev had some power, it would be an interesting fight, but he’s more of a slapper who mainly throws jabs. Pulev can be a problem if you’re shorter than him, have no power, and can’t jab the way he can. But if you have huge power, and you’re tall, then Pulev stands little chance. His German handlers have never matched him against anyone good, so this will be the first time he faces a quality heavyweight since he turned pro.
