Khan: Should I fight Pacquiao, Mayweather, Marquez, Broner or Alexander next?

khan1By Scott Gilfoid: It seems that #1 WBC, #3 WBA, #6 WBO Amir Khan (29-3, 19 KO’s) can’t make up his mind about who he wants to fight next, and he’s now to the point where he’s asking the fans who he should fight next later in this year in November or December. Khan, 27, has made no secrets about wanting to get in the ring with WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr in what would be a big payday fight against Mayweather, but the problem is Khan can’t fight on Mayweather’s next date on September 13th due to Ramadan.

Khan has eliminated himself from that fight, so it seems kind of pointless for him to include Mayweather’s name on the list for his next fight because Mayweather isn’t budging from this September 13th date to make things easier for Khan.

Khan said on his twitter site today, “Who you reckon I should fight next? Pacquiao, Mayweather Marquez, Broner or Alexander?”

Khan can scratch Manny Pacquiao from the list, because his trainer Freddie Roach wants no part of Khan for Pacquiao after watching his recent win over Luis Collazo last May. Roach now feels that Khan holds too much for him to be a viable opponent for Pacquiao to fight. Roach doesn’t want to turn off the paying fans with a fight that could be 12 rounds of holding by Khan.

I have to agree with Roach here. I think it would be a disaster for Pacquiao to fight Khan, because it would likely result in Pacquiao getting put in head-locks, clinches and shoved around the ring all night long. Pacquiao, 5’6”, would already be giving up 4 inches in height at 6 inches in reach to Khan, but then when you add in all the holding that would likely be done in the fight, it might prove difficult for Pacquiao to get any punches thrown due to the holding going on.

Adrien Broner hasn’t shown any interest in fighting Khan, so that’s a big ‘no’ as far as he’s concerned. He’s not going to agree to fight Khan, especially with him still rebuilding his career after his loss to Marcos Maidana.

Juan Manuel Marquez, 40, won’t fight Khan because he doesn’t have a world title in his possession, and that’s the only thing he’s interested in right now.

Devon Alexander would fight Khan, but I’m not so sure how important this fight would be for Khan. I mean, I don’t understand it. Why would Khan want to fight Alexander instead of IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter? Porter recently beat Alexander with ease last December, so why is Khan interested in fighting Alexander?

Why isn’t Khan mentioning Porter and Keith Thurman’s name? That’s the real question. He’s mentioned a bunch of guys who likely won’t face him, but he’s not mentioning the guys that he should be fighting in Thurman and Porter. Does Khan doubt whether he’s up to the job to beat either of them? If so, then I can’t see him going far in the division because those guys are the future of the 147-pound division.
