Khan: Mayweather will fight me

khan66By Scott Gilfoid: After a few weeks of staying quiet on the subject of Floyd Mayweather Jr, Amir Khan (29-3, 19 KO’s) opened up his mouth to let himself be heard today in saying that he still wants Mayweather and that he thinks the fight can happen next May. Mayweather plans on fighting September 13th this year, and then on May 2nd in 2015 on the Cinco de Mayo holiday.

Khan says he can’t fight him this September, but he can fight him next Mayweather, as if he wasn’t already aware of this. Mayweather hasn’t said much about Khan’s interest in fighting him, and you have to see this as a sign that he’s not all that interested in facing him.

Mayweather wants guys that are big names that the Hispanic fans, as well as other fans will want to see in big numbers on Cinco de Mayo. It’s unclear if Khan is the fight opponent for that holiday weekend if Mayweather’s idea is to lure a lot of Mexican fans into purchasing the fight on pay-per-view. Mayweather might be better off fighting Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on May 2nd if he wants a ton of PPV buys.

“A fight between me and Floyd Mayweather is going to happen,” Khan said on Sky Ringside. “As long as I keep winning and putting on great performances, it is definitely going to happen. But I cannot do September because of Ramadan. The next time that it could happen is in May. I can fight then so it could be Floyd’s next fight after September.”

I’m not sure if Khan is aware of this or not, but Mayweather only has 3 fights left in his career, so it’s not dead certainty that Khan will get the fight against him just by continuing to win his fights. I mean, if Khan is fighting guys like Julio Diaz, Carlos Molina and Luis Collazo still, then no it won’t matter how many times he fights. Mayweather won’t be interested in fighting him because Khan won’t be fighting the guys that he needs to in order to attract interest in a Khan-Mayweather fight.

The chances are good that Khan will never get the Mayweather fight if his adviser Al Haymon plays it safe with Khan by continuing to match him against old guys instead of the top fighters. He’s not going to get a fight against Mayweather fighting the weak opposition that he’s been fighting because it seems to obvious that he’s just padding his record in order to keep winning long enough to get the fight against Mayweather, which some boxing fans see as Khan’s cash out fight.
