floyd8282828By By Jermill Pennington: I’m not here to tell you Floyd Mayweather Jr is the greatest fighter of all time, nor am I here to give merit to his list of opponents. In the process of getting my point across I will not discredit or defame another fighter in order to elevate my perspective. Recently there have been a lot of articles written on Floyd Mayweather, some shining light on his career, and others taking aim at what they feel are weak points.

As they say “all is fair in love and war” so the difference in opinion from fans is fine with me. Everyone has an opinion; the best we can hope for in debate is that the person you are in debate with has a factual base to their argument. This allows for there to be some common ground for the debate to work from and see if they can come to an understanding.

In regards to Floyd Mayweather there are only two facts, he’s a fighter, and is unbeaten. We can use our fine tooth combs and say this guy was fat, that guy was old, that guy was slow and that other guy was short. We can go on and on and apply the same measure to just about every fighter. My thing is this, I’m tired .of the excuses, why doesn’t somebody just beat him already?

When Manny Pacquiao took the fall by the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez a large sect of fans said “it’s a fight, anything can happen”. Fair enough, however this theory of fighting doesn’t seem to apply to Floyd Mayweather. For some reason many seem to think that when Mayweather enters the ring he has done such definite calculations of his opponent he can’t lose. This would imply that Mayweather somehow coming in recent fights nearly 20 pounds down in weight to his opponent is taking no risk. Whether his opponent is young, old, tall or short, when Mayweather is involved theory of anything can happen goes out the window.

I’m hard pressed when thinking of other long reigning champions from any sport that had their championship pedigree questioned as much as Mayweather. Even in boxing it seems we pick and choose who we decide to make our hero’s. Mike Tyson didn’t have nearly the career Floyd has had and fought an impressive list of bums for the most part and we hold him in high regard. Michael Jordan the undisputed king of the NBA never has had his accomplishments dissected. I could raise the argument that Michael during his time faced terrible opposition on way to winning six titles. No doubt that the Utah Jazz were good in those days, but if you’re the best player on the planet and being guarded by the likes of Jeff Hornacek and Byron Russell, you should fair pretty well. When you think Pete Rose aside from the betting on baseball allegations you know that he is the MLB’s all -time hits leader. Do pundits care to add that he played until he was 45 and batted around 260 over the last 5 years of his career, if so I haven’t heard?

I don’t know everything but I do know this, 50 years from now people won’t know Juan Marquez had to come up in weight. They won’t know that Canelo with nearly 50 fights on his record was said to be green. All these excuse for why he hasn’t lost will be held in the minds of then old men that no one cares to listen to. All they will know is that his record was littered with champions and hall of famers when they visit boxing rec to find out about this Floyd Mayweather character. That said, I’m tired of the excuses, this is a fight and he’s no psychic, just beat him already.
