De La Hoya makes statement, but says very little

de la hoya33By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya finally came forward today to make a statement following the resignation of Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer this week, but instead of directly addressing that issue, De La Hoya merely sent a positive message that came across as a pep talk of sorts.

Here’s what De La Hoya said: “Golden Boy Promotions is moving ahead on all fronts. We look forward to continuing and expanding our key position in the boxing world and to providing the public with the very best the sport has to offer.”

De La Hoya didn’t even mention Schaefer, and that seems strange. At least De La Hoya could have clued the fans in on who will be Golden Boy Promotions interim CEO if nothing else. At least fans would know what’s going on in part. This statement is 2 days late, and it’s very empty as far as giving one a feeling of what’s going to happen in the future with Golden Boy. De La Hoya needs to see the loss of Schaefer as similar to the loss of an important piece of machinery. Fighters and fans alike want to know whether the machine can still work without that major part gone.

This statement or lack thereof, was De La Hoys’s chance to calm people and let them know things are going to work out. De La Hoya did say the company is going to move ahead, but he failed to say with who as the CEO, and with what fighters. Will it be just Golden Boy fighters or will it be a mix of Golden Boy and Al Haymon’s fighters on Golden Boy’s fight cards like we’ve increasingly been seeing lately. Without Haymon’s fighters on Golden Boy’s cards it could be a much different picture in the future with fewer big names on the cards, and with much less interesting undercards than what he’s become accustomed to seeing on Golden Boy’s cards.
