Danny Garcia to fight on August 9th at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York

garcia4By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (28-0, 16 KO’s) will be back in the ring on August 9th against an opponent still to be determined at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. This could be the last fight for the 26-year-old Garcia before he possibly challenges WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr for his titles next year in May.

It’s possible that Garcia will be moving up to 147 for his August fight in order to get one bout under his belt at this weight for him to get ready for the Mayweather fight. It probably doesn’t really matter though because Garcia is going to have problems against Mayweather regardless of whether he fights a tune-up at 147 or not. Mayweather isn’t Lucas Matthysse, a fighter who Garcia out-boxed last September in beating him by a 12 round decision.

A name you won’t be hearing from Garcia as his next opponent is Mauricio Herrera, as Garcia was arguably beaten by the Mexican fighter last March but was given a 12 round majority decision in a fight that took place in Garcia’s parent’s home country of Puerto Rico. Garcia said after the fight that he felt he won by 8 rounds to 4, but boxing fans as a whole picked Herrera as the better fighter in that one. Instead of wanting to clear up the controversy, Garcia is moving on to face other opponents. He did the same thing with the Matthysse fight, which was one that was going against Garcia until Matthysse suffered an eye injury.

For Garcia to be ready for a fight against Mayweather, he’s going to need to fight someone slick with hand speed. There’s not too many fighters like that in the welterweight division other than Amir Khan, but Garcia already knocked him out in 4 round in 2012. There’s no point in fighting Khan again, especially now that he’s changed his fighting style to where he’s holding, shoving and moving all the time. Khan is totally unlike Mayweather now. If Garcia were to fight WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri, he would give him a good warmup fight for Mayweather. But with Garcia signed with Al Haymon, it’s not going to happen.
