jacobs45By Allan Fox: #5 WBA Daniel Jacobs (27-1, 24 KO’s) will be facing #2 WBA Jarrod Fletcher (18-1, 10 KO’s) on August 9th in a very winnable fight for the 27-year-old Jacobs at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Jacobs had been talked about fighting WBO middleweight champion Pete Quillin for his title, but instead Jacobs will have the much easier task of fighting the 30-year-old Australian Fletcher for the WBA title.

If Jacobs can’t beat Fletcher for the title then it’s going to be tough for Jacobs to ever capture a world title belt, because this is perhaps the best chance he’s ever going to get to win a world title.

Jacobs fought Russian Dmitry Pirog for the vacant WBO middleweight title four years ago in July of 2010, but he was totally dominated by the tricky Pirog, and stopped in the 5th round. Since that fight, Jacobs has won his last 7 bouts, albeit against weak opposition. He stopped Milton Nunez in the 1st round in his last fight in March, and before that, he defeated former world title challenger Giovanni Lorenzo in the 3rd round last year in August.

Jacobs’ best win of his career came against Ishe Smith in August 2009 in a close 10 round decision. It wasn’t a great performance from Jacobs though, because he looked little better than Smith in that fight.

Fletcher was supposed to be fighting WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin next after the World Boxing Association ordered that fight, but Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler from K2 Promotions was able to get permission from the WBA to face former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel Geale instead on July 26th.

Fletcher’s resume is pretty thin with his best victories coming against Max Bursak and Randy Suico. In 2012, Fletcher was destroyed in 2 rounds by Britain’s Billy Joe Saunders, who isn’t considered a puncher. The fact that Fletcher couldn’t handle Saunders’ power would suggest that he’s going to have major problems when he gets in the ring against the harder punching Jacobs on August 9th.
