Change is good for Oscar and Schaefer

By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: Change can be good. It’s never bad unless one mismanages his/her time while making the change. The abrupt stepping down of Richard Schaefer as CEO of Golden Boy Promotions has done just that; brought about change. I refuse to side with either because I don’t know where either would be without each other.

Oscar had the popularity, but he needed someone to run the day to day operations which what Schaefer did. Who knows where they would be had they not teamed up. But it’s a new chapter and I’m very excited to see how this plays out. But this is what change does. It forces you to think outside the box and it brings out other things inside that one probably didn’t know was there. If Oscar steps into the Schaefer roll, this could force him to be more hands on with future fights. He will have to be more aware of what’s going on around him. For example, he stated that he didn’t know half of the fighters on Golden Boy were not signed to his company. How could he miss something like that?

If Schafer chooses to start his own promotional company, he will now get a taste of what it’s like to build from the ground up (Golden Boy was already established upon his hire). Or should he choose to join Mayweather Promotions, his banking savvy, and knowledge of promoting fights is already there. Or he could start promotional company with manager/advisor, Al Haymon. But things could ugly in the coming weeks. As I stated above, most of the fighters are not signed to Golden Boy.

Those names have yet to be released. But if they are major names, this will force Oscar to look for more talent and continue to build on the fighters that are under contract. Again, this isn’t a bad thing. He seems to have buried the hatchet with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum. But Oscar may have to wait until he finds out who is stable or who is not if he talking about putting n big fights. And where does Floyd Mayweather fit into all of this?

Mayweather has co promoted with Golden Boy since 2007 and he still has three fights left on his deal with Showtime. He could very well just co promote with another promotional company and continue with his career. But his loyalty is to Schaefer and he will definitely have an impact on Floyd’s career move. But I don’t see anything wrong with change. How each party uses his time during this change will be interesting to see.
