Andrade destroys Rose

andrade66By Scott Gilfoid: In an embarrassingly one-sided fight from start to finish, WBO junior middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade (21-0, 14 KO’s) totally dominated the over-matched #1 WBO challenger Brian Rose (25-2-1, 7 KO’s) in stopping him in the 7th round on Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

As I predicted earlier, Rose had no business being in the ring with Andrade tonight. As good as Andrade looked tonight, I wouldn’t have been surprised if he could have beaten Carl Froch and George Groves with the way he was fighting. Andrade was incredible tonight. The talent that he showed in nailing Rose at will with straight lefts. We saw a coming out party for a young star tonight. Andrade looked good enough to give Floyd Mayweather Jr, Erislandy Lara and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez all they could handle.

Andrade was flurrying on a bleeding and badly punch drunk Rose in the 7th round when the referee stepped in and halted the massacre. Andrade knocked Rose down twice in the fight in stopping him once in the 1st and another time in the 3rd round.

Andrade was hitting Rose at will with left hands to the head. In the 1st round, Andrade nailed Rose with a jab followed by a left to the head that dropped Rose on his backside. Andrade would continue to tee off on Rose in the 2nd round. In the 3rd, Andrade hit Rose with a right hook to the head that put dropped Rose for the second time. This time Rose was badly hurt upon getting to his feet. But for some reason, Rose didn’t have the sense enough to grab Andrade to clinch his way out of the round. Instead of clinching, Rose took head shots in the last minute of the round.

Rose looked totally lost in the ring from opening seconds of the fight, as he didn’t have the hand speed, power or even the work rate to do anything. To me, it just looked like Rose was afraid to throw punches for fear of being countered by Andrade. It’s unclear why Rose didn’t just go for it because he was getting humiliated by Andrade in round after round.

The problem that Rose had was that he was coming up 2-3 levels in terms of talent and he just wasn’t ready for this big of a step up. You’ve got to blame this on the WBO for making Rose the mandatory challenger to Andrade because he clearly wasn’t ready and it was clear even before the fight that Rose didn’t have the skills to be in the ring with him.
